Hi all,
Not sure if this has been posted here before, search does not bring up anything related.
I bought a Quest2 in 2008 and it has limited memory. The factory basemap takes up space, which I wanted to get back.
You will need:
- An SD card (at least 2GB) or virtual SD card
- An SD card reader, attached to your computer
- Your mapset, installed on your computer and unlocked
- WebUpdater.exe (you can find in the Mapsource or Garmin directory)
1. Create an imagefile from your mapset: Start MapSource, install the mapset, and unlock it
2. Put the SD card in your computer
3. Select all the maps and send them to the SD card instead of to your GPS unit
4. Take a look at that card when it's ready. MapSource will have made a folder on it with the name 'Garmin'. In that folder you will find an image with the name GMAPSUPP.img
5. Rename that imagefile to GMAPPROM.img and put it in a folder on your computer, for convenience in C:\GARMIN\WebUpdater\
6. Open a DOS command box and go to the folder C:\GARMIN\WebUpdater\
7. Connect your GPS unit and run the following command: 'C:\Garmin\WebUpdater.exe /upload_file rgn=49 path=C:\Garmin\WebUpdater\GMAPPROM.IMG -autorun usb /i'
8. That's it, the upload will take a few minutes and the original map will be gone
AFAICT, this works on the StreetPilot 2720 and the Quest 2, but use at your own risk!
Also, please note that I did this with the previous unlocker, where the unit's ID was required to unlock a mapset. So please make sure your mapset has been unlocked with the UnitID of your unit, else once the mapset has been uploaded it will not allow you to route!
EDIT: I have been told that while the new unlocker does not require unit ID, it will still be routable on the unit, but I have not tried this yet.
I found this guide on SmellyBiker forums in 2008, not sure who the author is.

@Naks
I corrected Basemap name to Detail map in your post
You have to navigate to get to the good.
Galaxy S5 Kitkat 4.4.2 / Nuvi1200->1250 / Nuvi3790T->34xx / Nuvi 2200 / Nuvi 66 / Oregon 600
As far as it being 'up to date' is concerned, the basemap is not as important as the detail map in that the basemap is usually worldwide and only has gross detail such as major roads which don't change that much. The basemap is very valuable at high zoom levels and scrolling to prevent lag or worse, but pretty useless for normal navigation even if it's routable. The important map to keep up to date is your local detail map of course, which you've done. You may be better to stay with your old basemap, as a more modern one such as for Nuvi units may be much larger with DEM info that your unit cannot easily handle when zoomed out. It is possible to remove DEM from a basemap though. I've got a SP 2610 still with it's original basemap.

Thanks catymap, Niel.
I updated the detail map to the 2012.3 Non-NT and it works fine, screen updates are a bit quicker than the 2010.3 maps, most likely because I had the Topo maps.
Still not able to find out what the basemap is, any ideas on how?
thanks!
As you can't browse the internal memory, there may be a menu setting which will tell you which version basemap you have. You can probably replace it using the same dos cmd substituting GMAPPROM.IMG with GMAPBMAP.IMG to load a modern basemap but i would only do that if your unit doesn't have a basemap for your region. If when you zoom out it tells you on the screen that it's changed from the detail map to the base map (after about 5 km usually) and there is still map info showing at high zoom then i personally would leave it alone. Some older units with limited memory came with regional basemaps e.g. North America only. If there's a world basemap or a regional one covering Africa in it, i'd definately leave it as-is. Even a 10 year old basemap is better than none and if you have no way of backing up what's there before you overwrite it you may be in for a world of trouble if you replace a working but albeit old one with a modern one that the unit chokes on. However, i've not owned a Quest/Quest2 and i don't know a lot about them. Having said all that, the basemap on my 2610 is at least 7 years old and works fine.

Ah, it does show the basemap on startup. Too quick to read, but something about Atlantic v3.00 basemap.
Thanks, I will not be messing with it
