    Guide How to manually upload maps to protected internal memory of GPSmap 278 & some Streetpilots

    this procedure has been mentioned before at some places but was very hard to find for me.
    Also some parameters have obviously changed with the current version of Webupdater 2.5.4
    10601014hh
    so I want to post it again.
    With my GPSmap 278 I got it working like this after some struggling:
    Preparations: have Mapsource and Webupdater installed and battery of the Garmin fully charged
    1. use Mapsource (or Mapinstall) to create a gmapsupp.img file from the desired map to any SD card or USB stick (pay attention to maximum allowed file size for internal maps on your Garmin - for the 278 the limit seems to be ~1.75GB)
    2. rename the gmapsupp.img to gmapprom.img and move it to a folder on your HD e.g. C:\newmap\
    3. unlock this file if necessary
    4. for cosmetical purposes use gmaptool to write a proper header to the file (e.g. 'CN Northamerica 2013.10')
    5. check out the location of webupdater.exe (e.g. C:\Garmin\webupdater\webupdater.exe)
    6. within the folder with the gmapprom.img create a text file with following content:
    <path to webupdater.exe> /i /autorun usb /upload_file rgn=49 path=<path to gmapprom.img>
    save the text file as sendmap.bat and close it
    Example:
    C:\Garmin\Webupdater\webupdater.exe /i /autorun usb /upload_file rgn=49 path=C:\newmap\gmapprom.img
    7. power up your Garmin and connect it to the PC, when done doubleclick sendmap.bat to start the upload

    *** for unknown reasons the upload (I experienced this with data cards as well) may break down in various stages ('Communication Error') - no problem: start again at 7. - sooner or later the upload will be succesfully finished. Nevertheless it's all your own risk ***
    good luck

    does anybody know more details about the rgn=<regnum> parameters?
    Thats what I found so far:
    49 = internal memory (278, streetpilots), special ~450MB memory of the 478
    77 = a special ~1,35 GB memory of the 478
    Is there a code to adress the data card as well?
    This would allow to modify a gmapsupp.img before uploading (I think of transparency, draw order and naming)

    seem to be quite solo here, but I found a solution for the last above question myself.
    Maybe there is a more elegant way, but that's how I managed it:
    My goal was to get a transparent City Navigator NT map on top of a Recreational Map in order to see topo features while navigating.
    My first (failed) approach was
    - to create 2 seperate temp_x.img files (1. City Navigator, 2. Topo Map) each covering the same region (added file size <512MB)
    - then use gmaptool to set the City Navigator temp file to transparent
    - then upload both temp-imgs together to the 276c's data card with [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] or [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]
    but obviously it is not possible to upload img's from gmap coded maps this way

    second (successful) way was:
    - set a previously created City Navigator gmapsupp.img transparent (with gmaptool)
    - convert this file to 'old Mapsource format' with [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]
    - now having both maps installed in MapSource it was easy to select a map set containing desired parts from both maps and transfer them to the data card the conventional way.
    MAP LOOKS GREAT! :-)

    3 - basemap (0x03)
    49 - gmapprom (0x31)
    50 - gmap_oem (0x32)

    Just an advice. Never experiment with other nuмbers as you will kill your 278. (especially 5 (0x05)) You can upload an image (or what ever data you want) using also an rgn and proper firmware.

    Solution found: Breakdown while uploading maps (Message "Communication Error') can generally be avoided if unit is connected to power cable

    ddabcd/Doc, do you know how i should upload a new basemap to a StreetPilot 2610 or 2720? I'm wanting to change the Americas basemap for Pacific on both models.

    When i rename the image file as a bin file and load it in RGN_Tool it loads as Section 3305 not XXXX and Region RGN 33 not 03, and i can't override them.

    Ive tried also with command line for WU:

    C:\Garmin\Webupdater\webupdater.exe /i /autorun usb /upload_file rgn=3 path=C:\Garmin\gmapbmap.img

    and

    C:\Garmin\WebUpdater\webUpdater.exe /upload_file rgn=3 path=C:\Garmin\gmapbmap.img -autorun usb /i

    Also tried rgn=03 with both. I get an error screen similar to that in Post #1 headed with 'Invalid Command Line Syntax'.

    The command "C:\Garmin\WebUpdater\webUpdater.exe /upload_file rgn=49 path=C:\Garmin\gmapprom.img -autorun usb /i" worked fine for the detail map change on the 2720.

    It would seem that's rgn10 according to this post: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ].

    Answering own question: The RGN packed basemap image can be loaded to units which have the basemap in rgn3 using Updater.exe as described in Post #9 here: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ].

    @marcovitch
    You might need to give more information as to what are you trying to do. Send a new primary detail map to region 49, i guess? If so, check the command used in the BATfile is in accordance Webupdater.exe and the *.img file [i.e. ensure the paths to locations and names are correct].

    Also you need to be sure that the img file is not larger than the unit's available region size. If you don't know the actual size, dump the region using [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] to see what's available. That will also give you a backup of the existing map. Read from Page 3 onwards particularly Posts #34 & 35, they're regarding SP 27x0 and 26x0 but one of those methods should work for your GPSMAP 278. The current primary detail map in rgn49 [hex 31] will be dumped as a *.hex file and it will be larger than the actual image as the entire available space is dumped both used and unused so you'll then know if your intended img file will fit ok.
