What version of logo do you mean in your 1300 case? What is map about?

I think i see the problem Strephon and Giomen. Maybe you're talking about two different things? This is my understanding of how Garmin update software works:
From this info in the GarminDevice.xml:
<Model><PartNumber>006-B0972-00</PartNumber><SoftwareVersion>620</SoftwareVersion><Description>nüvi 1300</Description></Model>Id< ... etc, etc.
WebUpdater reads only the Model-Description, i.e. the HWID 0972, and the FW Version determines which FW and Voice, Text etc files to offer for the unit.
MapUpdater however reads the Model name [1300, 1350, 1390 etc] and UID etc i.e. this "<Id>xxxxxxxxxx</Id><RegistrationCode>xxxxxxx</RegistrationCode><Unlock><Code>xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx</Code></Unlock><Unlock><Code>xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx</Code></Unlock>" to determine if there's entitlement to a map update and which additional files to dl with the map [JCV, ASR etc].
I suppose GarminExpress looks at all those parts seeing as it handles both fw and map updates.
What are others' thoughts on this?
Webupdater reads ModelId (HWID) and FW version. Put any Model Description and webupdater will recognize unit by HWID.
Yes. But it does read the Model Name description because it will show nuvi1300 (Unit ID xxxxxxxxxx). i.e.:

Now edit the GarminDevice.xml Model Description to 1350, and voila:

That doesn't mean it takes it into account any further of course, and as you said it's only the HWID which identifies the unit and determines the appropriate FW, and the current version which then determines if an update is needed [which is what i also said].
PS: I had 'WebUpdater reads only the Model-Description, ... etc', i meant 'WebUpdater only reads the Model-Description, ...'. Sorry.
Webupdater reads more information from GarminDevice.xml , but model is recognized by HWID in GarminDevice.xml. Model Description is only text displayed in Webupdater's window.
TRIVIA
If Garmin had to do a "Low Level Interrogation" of the device we would not be able to cheat by using "Flash disk" instead of device.
Serial devices of course work with proper low level communication between the device and the Garmin Software.

It's a given that we're all agreed on Garmin's programs via usb only looking as far as the GarminDevice.xml for the info it needs and for the very reason you've stated. I think what is the issue here is what info does MapUpdater/GE then use from the xml. It obviously 'reads' the Model Description, but does it then use that info to determine which additional files to dl to the device? [in Strephon's case the JCV file for his 1300 with splash of 1340-50]. I suspect it does, by looking further into the xml to see if the path for jcv is present and maybe further. Maybe there needs to be some synergy between the files paths, the Model Description/ID and even other info. So would Strephon be given the JCV file if he edited his modded splash 1300's xml to show his Model Description as 'nuvi 1390' for instance?
It is not true way. Be wait answer from Strephon...Quote:

Yes, and i do know what you mean Giomen therefore we two shall not speak further of it on pain of hot pokers and expulsion from Paradise .... :baddevil: Other than to say: That question was rhetorical BTW. ;))
Wait for what answer? Neil's got the right splash.Quote:
