Default Garmin Nuvi GPS U.S.B Power Connector pinout

For those that are interested in avoiding your Garmin Nuvi going into PC mode when plugged into a U.S.B +5 volt power supply

    U.S.B connector pinout

    1 +5V 5 volts DC
2 data not connected / float
3 data not connected / float
X GND connected to pin 4 (GND) with 17.3K ohm resistor
    4 GND ground

    Default Clarification please

I'm trying to make sense of this description. I see that the mini and micro USB connectors have 5 pins (as opposed to standard USB, which has 4. Standards, gotta love 'em . . .)

I'm thinking what you really meant was:

    U.S.B connector pinout

    1 +5V 5 volts DC
2 data not connected / float
3 data not connected / float
4 connected to pin 4 (GND) with 17.3K ohm resistor
    5 GND ground

    Yes? No?

Then there's the question of how you physically did this; did you cut open the wire and splice into it there?

There is no wire to pin 4. You have to dismantle the plug. If your supply is standard USB with maximum current draw 500mA, than you should directly connect pin 4 and 5, without resistor.

Gentle reminder to all, there are a few Garmin Nuvi around that "does not like" getting power from a standard USB connector that has pin 4 and 5 both shorted to ground and it goes into a "computer connected mode" or USB storage mode. My Nuvi 765 is one and I believe there are a few that have the same problem as well.

Many cable USB headers (or plugs as they are called) have a small plastic contact carrier that holds all the metallic contacts and you solder the wires to the piece before inserting into the USB connector housing. For most of the plugs, there will only be 4 contacts for you to solder on, i.e. 5V, D+, D- and GND, and no connection to pin 4 or pin 4 is default shorted to pin 5.

If you are purchasing a new USB plug to achieve the 17.3k resistor to pin 4, please check that you have access to pin 4 in the plastic contact carrier, i.e. 5 contact and 5 solder pads.

Standard USB connector doesn't have pins 4-5 shorted, pin 4 is floating free. This is configuration, that switches nuvi into PC connection mode. When you short this pins, it will run in navigation mode.

Default Use a standard mini USB cable to power your receiver

A quick fix for missing/broken original Garmin USB cable. It happened to me and the way to fix it is to use a standard USB-lighter power cord as follows:
    1. Plug the power cord in your lighter.
2.Plug the USB end in the Garmin receiver. The receiver comes in USB mode/computer mode. While it shows USB mode/computer mode, unplug either the usb or the lighter end -I usually unplug the lighter end- and you will see the Garmin receiver switching from USB mode/computer mode to receiver mode, starting to load maps. I The moment it switches from USB mode/computer mode to receiver mode plug either the USB or the lighter plug on again and it should boot up and load the receiver. You are good to go now. Repeat the procedure each time you disconnect the power.

When pin4 it's connect with 8.1Ko to ground, the nuvi open the special meniu: Dispatch and enable serial comunication on USB
This is use for FMI(Fleet Management Interface)

Would connecting a OTG cable be sufficient or the same as soldering in a resistor? That would put the device in a different mode (host or device).
