Unhappy Nuvi 54LM: Shutdowns in ~2 secs after reflash

While performing a map update via the GarminMapUpdater software, the unit became unusable. So I proceeded to

Reflash the Nuvi 54LM in pre-boot mode (Garmin usb drivers installed) using GarminCure3 v0.1 to load the Cure with file: nuvix2andx4_GCDFile__400.gcd

Note: I could not find any explicit reference to Nuvi 54LM software version on this site so I used:
[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

Was able to flash the device using Updater.exe

However on reboot, it shutdowns in about 2 secs and am unable to format it in RMPrepUSB within this time. It appears in RMPrepUSB momentarily but before I can go through with the formatting sequence, it shuts down

Am able to reflash it using Updater.exe tool again but same shutdown in ~2 secs symptoms exist.

    1. Did I use the right nuvix2andx4_GCDFile__400.gcd file for the Nuvi 54LM device? Is the shutdown because I used the wrong software update file?

    2. Any magic sequence to make it not shutdown in 2 secs so that I can format it using RMPrepUSB?

    Thanks in advance!

Update: I re-flashed it using the ORIGINAL firmware option in GarminCure. Now the device boots up but is not recognized by the computer. (does not appear in Device Manager, no drive letter shown, in Device diagnostic mode it states USB Device: No Cable Detected)

How do I revive from this situation?

Does he device seem to work properly ? Can you navigate with it. ?
Try to connect to Garmin Express.

If the device is flashed using the ORIGINAL firmware option in GarminCure, it boots and device options are available. However since, it won't detect in a computer via USB, I can't load any maps onto it. So navigation is not possible.

If flashed using CURE option in GarminCure, it goes into 2 sec shutdown loop. Connected to Garmin Express. It’s able to detect it before it shutdowns in 2 secs. Was able to install Garmin Express update (after multiple attempts during shutdown) but device still continues to shutdown.

    Try Another Cable ?
Try Another Computer ? Prefer Win10
Garmin Drivers ? (Normally installed by express).
GarminCure 3 by Kunix Works (I think you used it before)
Maybe that device has a corrupt region 41 or a Hardware Fault. (Difficult to fix @ this Stage)
Try to put Maps on SD Card to make it Navigate.
Format SD to FAT 32 on another Device or Card Reader.(NOT NTFS)
I think you have the correct RGN File, Try an OLDER version. Sometimes it Wakes them up.
Try to PM Neil, Kunix, Catymag, Lolypop (they got Magic to fix difficult situations)

Thanks for advice. Here's how it panned out.

    1. Tried with 3 different cables.
    2. Tried flashing from Win 10 RS2 64 bit and Win 7 32 bit
    3. Have the Garmin usb drivers installed.
    4. GarminCure3 always updates successfully both Cure and Original in preboot mode.
    6. Tried flashing with GCD 350, 360, 370, 380, 390 --> 400 versions.
    5. Flashed a SDCard to FAT32 and loaded an unlocked map to sdcard\Garmin\gmapsupp.img location. Nuvi 54LM is able to load this map on the SDCard. So we have a work around to continue to use the GPS. Many thanks for this tip!

The issue am currently facing is:

    a. Nuvi 54LM when connected to a PC will not go into mass transfer mode. Can't see the Nuvi or SD card storage from Windows Disk Management or explorer. How can I force mass transfer mode to view its drive contents?

    b. After I flash this device using GarminCure3 and look at the inventory page, the CN North America NT 2018.20 detail goes from 0% to checksum 1E96DB4 in a couple of minutes. At bootup I get a "Cannot authenticate maps" for the North America NT 2018 map which should be part of this lifetime update Nuvi 54LM device. But this map does not load post bootup.

Thanks again for all the help!

Have you looked @ this [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

You must do this every time you flash firmware or perform Hard Reset Clear NVRam

Maybe your Unit ID has Changed Region 41 corrupt ?? (serious problem) CatyMag can Fix this
OR Maybe your GMA files are missing (Part of Map Update)

Can Nuvi be seen by Garmin Express ?

Have you done hard reset ? Clear Nonvol [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

You can also try to flash Nuvi by SD Card

You need a different version GCD file (older or newer not same version) (Must be valid ORIGINAL (not patched) GCD file for your Nuvi)
    Rename it as GUPDATE.GCD
Place it in clean SD CARD folder /garmin
    Switch off Nuvi
    Switch on Nuvi

    It should flash.

    After you flash GarminCure3
    Switch off Nuvi
    Connect USB Cable to Computer
    Connect Nuvi to USB Cable.
The Nuvi Should do a partial Boot and Internal Drive Should be Visible.
If this does not happen Something is Wrong with the Nuvi.
Cure is used only to remove corrupt files which caused Nuvi to Not boot (Bricked) Your Nuvi is not actually bricked.

Pressing the upper right hand corner of the volume screen does not invoke the diagnostic page for me. Have tried connecting the device to 6 different computers with Garmin USB drivers installed - still won't show in explorer.

The symptoms and steps followed are same as described by [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]previously in this post.

How can I check if this Nuvi 54LM device has region 41 corrupt?

Device can be seen by Garmin Express. However it tells me I have to use Garmin Map Updater to update the maps. Try map update now (again) using Garmin Map Updater 3.3.4

Followed your instructions and cleared nonvol. Same symptoms persists.

Will attempt to do the SD card flashing method next.

Thanks for bearing with me and all the great suggestions

WE Can detect corruption in Nuvi Normally by looking at garmindevice.xml but of course you cannot get it because it is not possible to get files from Nuvi.
What I wonder is how Garmin Express is able to see your device. (Maybe it uses some other protocol)
Try to connect to Garmin Express with the SD Card Removed. Can you do updates such as Voices etc from Garmin Express ? (With the SD Removed)
Your Nuvi is Actually Not an MTP device. (It should be in Mass Storage Mode Permanently Anyway)
Can you select different voices ? (Voices are files in internal hard drive)
Can you see the SD Card as a drive in the Computer when it is in the Nuvi ?
Try to clean the USB connector on the Nuvi with some contact cleaner or similar.
I'm leaning towards a hardware fault because GarminCure3 is working very well for many thousands of users.
