Tool Universal Firmware Patcher for Protected Garmin Devices

Universal Firmware Patcher for Protected Garmin Devices v.1.20

This is an universal firmware patcher for protected Garmin devices. Read this entire post BEFORE you start. You may not have to do every step. Do not deviate from this tutorial or you may permanently damage your device. It's safe to do this provided you follow the instructions exactly. Regardless, any risk is entirely yours.

Many devices recently have a strong firmware protection and cannot use unlocked maps because firmware requires .gma and has MSV ( Map Signature Verification).

In the fw list [see spoiler below] you will be able to check if your device firmware requires this patcher or if it just needs gimgunlock+mapsigpatch or simply an .unl file or old gimgunlock.

Important note by MOD: Please check in attached list, behind spoiler below, as to whether you need to flash patched .rgn in preboot mode or if you simply can flash patched .gcd in a normal way which is possible if the original firmware does not contain a GSV check yet (GSV: ---) 2r768ol

Montana 680t users: read the note at the bottom of this post. 7RTJsF4

    Spoiler:

    Changelog:
Improved support for the Edge 1030 firmware

Look for the newest versions of firmware in this: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

Warning - Improper use of this software can damage your device: It's strongly recommended to backup your device files and NV before playing with firmware. [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

Procedure to use the patcher and to load the patched firmware in preboot mode ("GSV: Yes" devices) :

Prerequisite: You must have Garmin USB drivers installed on your computer to use Updater.exe.

    1) Remove any gupdate.gcd from your device. If you don't it'll likely flash the device back to original (unpatched) firmware. It's not always there but if it's present it'll be in hidden .System folder of these protected devices. .System folder can only be seen in Mass Storage Mode, not in Media Transfer Protocol (See 2, the link there also shows how to see .System folder).

    2) Set it to Mass Storage Mode if necessary. [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

    3) Download compressed folder containing the latest version of patcher etc. from behind the above spoiler. Check your device's HWID is supported in hwids.txt before proceeding.

    4) Copy the patcher in a directory along with your firmware's gupdate.gcd [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]
Note: be sure to get your device HWID's correct firmware, check it's HWID in GarminDevice.xml found in device's Garmin folder ( [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] ) or here: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ].

    5) Drop the gupdate.gcd in its window. The patcher will provide the patched gcd file as '<original_name>_patched.gcd' in your chosen directory.2r768ol

    6) Download RGN_Tool: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

    7) Drop your gupdate_patched.gcd in RGN_Tool and save it as an .rgn file. Important: Save it only in this format 'xxxx01000yyy.rgn' where 'xxxx' is your used firmware's 4 numeral HWID and 'yyy' is the software version. See [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] for naming reason safety and procedure.

    8) Download Updater.exe: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

Copy Updater.exe into a directory along with your .rgn file, drag the .rgn onto Updater.exe, Updater.exe will open, select radio button for 'USB Device'

    a2vwhi

Remember to remove any previous gupdate.gcd in your device before flashing any updates.

Now, with it fully OFF (not in standby), plug the device into your PC and device will start and immediately, as Garmin logo appears press upper left corner to get preboot mode which enables Updater.exe to see your device (you may also hold the upper L cnr then plug in PC), quickly when Updater shows the device details in the window next to 'USB Device', click 'OK' or hit Enter on keyboard (still holding upper left corner until the flashing process is finished and Updater will show "Success" message). Safely unplug device from PC. Some devices reach preboot differently - All devices Preboot Modes : [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

    9) Clear Non Vol.(note: if you don't want to get weird problems, do it!) Nuvi: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] or reset your device [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]
You are done, your device is unprotected, now you can use every kind of unlocked maps (NTU too).

NOTE: To flash a firmware update in the future, just patch the new gupdate.gcd, remember to remove any previous gupdate.gcd in your device, flash new fw normally with WebUpdater (drag&drop the file in WebUpdater shortcut on desktop) or copy it renamed gupdate.gcd in the sd:\Garmin or in Device's .System. 2r768ol You can even flash initially via patched GCD file if your unit has no GSV in firmware.

after loading patched firmware, reset the unit and disable Geocache Dashboard in map settings before using unlocked map or the unit locks up when it is selected.

    big-bang, Thank You!
If i use it with 35x7, i will doesn't need to unlock any future releases of the maps? Simple drop it to device without "prepatching"?

    @Astx

This patcher does not affect the unlocking of maps, it disables MSV only.
Firmwares of the nuvi 35xx do not contain the MSV yet.

Welcome to GPS Power Big-Bang! What a great first post reflecting a huge amount of work not only in making the patcher but in compiling such a comprehensive reference table. I'm stunned that such an amazing tool has even been made and now released publicly. Rep+ added and i'm sure you'll get more of that and endless likes too! Thanks for choosing GPS Power to release this patcher.

So, as said by Cnfhbr, my understanding is that modern units including Astx's 35x7 HWID 1603 [MSV: --- | GVS: Yes] absolutely still do still need map unlocked with gimgunlock or gimunlock+MapSigPatch but don't need the fw patcher, i.e. any for map which is not LM OEM to the unit or not purchased officially.

Therefore, the units which benefit most from the firmware patcher are the ones with a 'strong' protection which have been unable to use either original gimgunlock or gimgunlock+MapSigPatch to unlock 'official' maps, e.g.: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]. Such units generally are shown in the table with "MSV: Yes" and "GSV: Yes". Units with "MSV: Yes" and "GSV: ---" also benefit. Note there is 'strong' MSV and 'weak' MSV and those with 'strong' must be patched whereas 'weak' only need patching for Unicode map use. After treating the fw with the patcher they all can then use any maps unlocked even with the original gimgunlock without the MapSigPatch.

Because units such as 35x7 are shown "MSV: ---" and "GSV: Yes", and don't have an MSV check they can continue to use just gimunlock+MapSigPatch to treat maps unless higher protection by way of Map Signature Verification is included in later fw versions. Other earlier units can even continue to use the original gimgunlock because they have "MVS: ---" and "GSV: ---" and an example is nuvi 2xx with latest fw.

So the table gives an easy ready-reference: Units needing their firmware treated with the new fw patcher and maps unlocked with gimgunlock; and those needing only maps unlocked with gimunlock+MapSigPatch; and those needing only maps unlock with original gimunlock [or of course alternately with gimgunlock+MapSigPatch]; and finally those now rare older units which continue to need only an UNL file.

It also seems that it's the units which contain a GSV check i.e. both "MSV: Yes" and "GSV: Yes" e.g. nuvi 53/55/56/65/66 etc ['weak' MSV so only need patching for Unicode map use]; 25x9/26x9; 2xx7/8[C4 HWID 2077]; dezl x70; zumo 590; nuvicam etc ['strong' MSV] where only the initial fw loading needs be done as a patched GCD file converted to an RGN file and then loaded using Updater.exe, later versions of fw can be then be simply loaded via a patched GCD file. For units with "MSV: Yes" and "GSV: ---" even the initial loading can be via patched GCD file.

I'm completely stunned not only by this achievement but also it's quietly modest unassuming release .....

Big Bang - can you be more specific about the procedure in step 3. I end up at a French book site where the original zip file can not be found.

It is simple, when you open the page (French site) on the right side you have 2 rectangular windows (gray and green).
Click on grey one (the text in it finish with NORMAL). Fill verification code (also on the right side of the screen).
Press Enter and download will start immediately. That's it.

I have a very strange problem at steps 4,5. I copy *.gcd in the same folder as patcher lies. The latter works successfully, but in win7 in that folder the patched file is absent! When I press "Browse" button in patcher I can see my created patched *.gcd, but it is not available and not visible any other way. Please, how to solve this problem?

Only if shown "MSV: ---" and "GSV: Yes" will generate a patched gcd.
