    Yes, it is updated/rewritten on every boot. Edit it, remove it, call it anything you like. Whatever you do the system will re-create it correctly anyway.

    I suspect the problem is that it's Garmin software running on hardware that maybe wasn't designed by Garmin. Kenwood/Garmin units have some funny quirks too.

    So where does it gets the data to create it? From nv area? From boot.bin?

    AFAIK, it's all written from the nonvol region, rgn41 in older, rgn154 in later. Older 'region only' devices without a visible file system (in modern units it's rgn48 in earlier or rgn83 in later devices) don't have a GarminDevice.xml. Stop asking me increasingly difficult questions, i thought you already knew this stuff?

    You can handle it (at the tiresome of repeating it) Nevertheless, my memory is poor on such matter, but I'm slowly absorbing (and appreciative) of what you're saying.

    Hmmm, a rare crumb of appreciation for this lowly journeyman from the Coder's rich table. I'll take it, thank you.

    @big-bang & Neil,

    THANK YOU! for creating this excellent tutorial. Following it to the letter enabled me to successfully load my unlocked maps after the most recent Garmin firmware update. Your time and talent are greatly appreciated.

    Hi guys,
    I'm new to this forum and to the whole procedure,so please bear with me.
    I have a Nuvi 57LM which I'm trying to unlock.Did all the steps, but keep on getting the same error when launching updater.exe.See the following image.
    [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]
    I keep the upper left corner pressed when inserting the cable and the program sees it,but every time when I press ok,I get the same error.Checked everything and it looks ok.The only thing I didn't change is the cable, but right now I don't have another miniUSB at hand (not much used lately ).So if anyone could help me I'll be greatfull.

    The message indicates the device has exited preboot before you've started the flash. You have only a very short window of opportunity with modern devices, a matter of seconds. Keep trying, but be prepared by having the patched fw loaded to Updater.exe, your mouse cursor hovered over 'OK' and radio button for 'USB Device' selected. Plug the USB cable into a REAR port only of the PC directly (no hub). Then insert the miniUSB end into the nuvi while firmly holding the upper LH corner and hit OK or Enter key on PC kb IMMEDIATELY the device details appear in the window adjacent to 'USB Device'. Keep firmly holding the screen or it'll exit preboot.

    After several trial and error it turned out that there was some Garmin software running, which I didn't see at first. After closing it everythng went smooth. No just to get some memory cards and maps, and try if they work.

    Hello,
    I'm trying to patch Garmin DriveSmart50.
    I'm on the stage to upload the RGN via Updater.exe , but I dont see the device. Capture

    When I plug it I'm thing that it's on preboot mode. There is a label "SYSTEM" for a few seconds then goes to "system loading".
    Do you have any idea ?
