Sorry! SW was published now June 30, 2015 but date is May 29, 2015 on garmin.com.
I do not understand this shtick. I am agree what I was not lucky on last week. But today morning I had returned new 2 pcs of Nuvi 55 to seller under cashback program due to this reason:

Fixed an issue that could prevent maps from unlocking.
Fixed an issue that caused proximity alert settings to be reset.
Improved searching along route for POIs from custom POI databases.

Units did not supported old licensed SD card and was not properly working with our corporate POI. I resolved to cashback after I did emailing to Garmin on past week and received the answer what this unit do not support any MPC map and customs POIs as fact. Garmin really became unguided monster after all of that!

Possibly the unlocked maps working on nüvi 55/56/65/66 does not apply to NTU maps. I have a nüvi 66 but had no time yet to verify this hypothesis.

    Edit:
Just confirmed by test that the above assumption is correct for FW 4.40.

Unluckily for me, I bought my nuvi 55 only 4 weeks ago, before I knew that it had protection to stop you using unlocked maps. It came with 4.30, but after reading this thread, I updated to 4.40 hoping that would do the trick. But alas, there's no change for me, and it still rejects an unlocked NT USA map. Bugger!!
