I'm hoping that you've also bought the DC20 reversing camera for your US dezl760. It isn't offered with the BC20 reversing camera in the box afaik, unlike the RV760 which can be bought with or without the camera. The camera is offered as an accessory to both dezl and RV, but not for nuvi 2797. The reason the US 2797 isn't offered BC20 as an accessory escapes me at present, but i'm suspecting only a marketing ploy by Garmin.

dezl760, nuvi2797/2798[US] and RV760 all have the same PCB P/N of 105-01878-02, and while the 2 nuvis use the same firmware, it's different to the dezl and RV firmwares and the 3 have different HWIDs. They should be fully cross-flashable but a safe way to experiment would be to try initially using the original unit's HWID and boot.bin.

I would be interested to see if 2797 can work in the RV/dezl/2798 reversing camera mount. Although 2797's not listed as being compatible with the BC20 reversing camera that doesn't mean it isn't of course. Garmin may simply want ppl to buy a dezl, RV or the US 2978 which has DC20 included. As the US 2797 and 2798 share the same fw and hwid i'm betting that 2797 can in fact use the wireless mount and the BC20 [there is an EU model 2798 but it's not the same as US 2798, it has no back up camera, the '8' simply indicating that its supplied with a HD/FM GTM70 Traffic Receiver whereas the EU 2797 has only an FM model in the box]. The only thing which may limit that compatibility of the various US units would be if there are different pinouts in the unit to mount connections of 2797 compared to 2798/dezl/RV or the 2797 has some hardware disablement on the board.

If you are wanting to experiment johotx, i'd be happy to assist with making firmware packs for you to try various conversions and i'm sure Loly would do so too. Just say what you want to try, dezl > nuvi and dezl > RV both, or just one. Be all at your own risk of course, but should be totally safe. If i had any of those units and a BC20 i'd try all combinations myself without hesitation.

    Hi Neil,

I have a dezl760 that I would love to change to a rv760 for the purpose of using the garmin smartphone link app for my iphone to receive traffic... Is there a way you can explain the procedure or point me in the right direction so I do not make a paperweight...

    Thanks,

    Dave

Sure Dave, just use [Only registered and activated users can see links. ], but only as a guide, substituting the dezl760 boot.bin and the RV760 fw1_resources.bin & fw_all_.bin [combined or hybrid, 1st method]. Or you can use the full flash 2nd method if you're brave. Flashing the full RV software will change the HWID to 1730 and it can be updated normally with GarminExpress or WebUpdate for future firmware versions.

Using the 1st method with hybrid firmware using original dezl boot.bin and HWID override in RGN_Tool to keep it as 1516 is safer intrinsically though.

PS: Welcome to GPSPower, just noticed it's your first post. Good luck and post again if you're unsure of anything. Don't try it if you don't understand what's going on, ask first.

    Hey Neil...

    Thanks for the response...
So I have questions... Copied everything from the 2 drives that show up when I connect the dezl 760 to my computer and after I unhid the hidden files... So if this is correct I should be able to restore the files to the unit and still have a working unit... If I am reading how to backup the important file "region 41" there is not actually a file named that... You have to separate it out of the gupdate.gcd file using the rgn tool...
Sooooo. Is this as simple as making a "new" gupdate file after separating out the boot.bin from the dezl 760 gupdate.gcd file and the fw_all.bin and resources.bin from the latest RV 760 file from Garmins web site RVandCamper760_480.gcd combining the 3 files into the .gcd then overwriting the one on the GPS and then giving it a reboot...
Also if I ever wanted to go back to the factory settings just overwrite with the original gupdate.gcd???

I could just be delusional... Thanks for the help...

Slightly delusional Dave. Good you made a files backup. Correct that Region41 isn't a 'file', it's a region and regions are part of the unit's non-volatile internal flash memory. The name is a nod to the fact that the Garmin memory is divided into sections known as regions. They can't be seen in Mass Storage mode like the visible file system or copied like that either, however even the file system is a 'region' and it's region 83 in your unit [don't worry about that now though]. So, also region41 cannot be 'separated out of the gupdate.gcd file' because it isn't in here [it's just not part of the firmware either]. It can however be copied as a *.bin file using SD txt commands. Read up about that here: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ].

Nup. Read my initial reply above again and also that tut for 2460>dezl560 very carefully. Please don't attempt anything until you've fully understood the process. You've got right the bit about combining the 3 bin files, however not correct about making a gcd file. They're combined into an rgn file which is then flashed in pre-boot mode using Updater.exe. So, rather than overwriting it, you need to remove any existing gupdate.gcd file before you flash the rgn file.

Also if I ever wanted to go back to the factory settings just overwrite with the original gupdate.gcd??? .....
Only if you retain the existing HWID can you then use a higher version dezl760 gupdate.gcd file to revert back to original dezl.

Read and read again until you understand mate or you will have an expensive paper-weight. We'll be happy to help you in more detail but only if you know basically what you're doing. No one here can take any responsibility for an adverse outcome because the actual process is entirely in your hands. It's safe enough if done properly though. I just need to be sure that you have the basic principles nailed down before giving any more detailed help.

    Cool Neil...

I had to go get a SD card... Have plenty of them at home... But halfway across the country does not help... I now have the 41.bin file copied to the SD card it is about 6.12MB...

As for the rgn file yeah I typed the wrong extension... So to be clear what I did... I took the original gupdate.gcd file from the copy I made... I put it into a folder called dezl on my desktop... I opened that file in the RGN tool... Then saved each of the 3 files, boot.bin, resources.bin, and fw_all.bin into the same folder... I then did the same with the RVandCamper760_480.gcd file spitting it into the 3 files in a folder called RV760... Before closing the RGN tool at this point with the program showing the info for the RV760 I loaded the dezl760 boot.bin... When the dialog box drops away you see it change the HW ID from 1730 to 1516... I then saved it as gupdatenew.rgn... I believe at this point I am ready to go am I right... I just need to follow the last part of using updater.exe to push the file to the NV of the unit... If I want to go back to stock I need to take the original gupdate.gcd file make it a rgn file in the RGN tool and restore it to the device with updater.exe correct???

Thanks for the help... I would never flame anyone if I bricked my device... My choice I understand...
