Thanks for a very quick reply.

I have just been reading the above thread, and here is some more info to post #89

1 Its a nuvi 1490lmt dont know the FW version or HWID.
2 I dont know how or why it got bricked.
3 When turning on device it ONLY shows Garmin logo, nothing else.
4 My pc cant see the device (all other Garmins i try is ok)
5 The ONLY thing i have tried for now, is pre boot mode,
seems to work ok, (if WebUpdater is running it can "see" the 1490
    and the unit ID.
    6 All drivers is installed.
7 I have not yet tried any other programs than WebUpdater.
8 I have not yet tried any other programs than WebUpdater.
9 The ONLY thing i have tried for now, is pre boot mode,
seems to work ok, (gives me the usb sound) and if
WebUpdater is running it can detect the 1490 and the unit ID,
but will not allow me to RE-INSTALL the FW.
So when it says reinstall i think The FW is current,
    but dont know for sure.
    10 No backup at all.

So it looks to me pretty much the same as Amos1,
and before i do anything else, i would like some advice
    for my situation.

And, if it turns out to be the case.

I also like some help getting a hold on this thread,
as I find it very confusing.
It seems that the problem is solved, and device
is running again, I just cant find the solution.

Any help very much appreciated. and Thanks for your time.

Your device is bricked which is why it cannot be seen in Windows because it cannot enter Mass Storage Mode. You can obtain your HWID via 7ToWin in preboot [see point 7 of the linked thread by catymag]. It's essential that you check the HWID because there are 2 different chips in 14xx. The most common is HWID 0972 but the MediaTek chip models are HWID 1104 with different firmware.

So, check your HWID. Make and use the cure3 fw as per the tut thread linked in point 8 and then post again either here or in the cure3 thread if you need more help. This thread is confusing to you because amos1 was not able to successfully completely cure his unit. His experience is not typical because even after loading the cure fw his unit couldn't enter MSM.

I suggest you stop trying to make sense of this thread, and just thoroughly read Post #1 of the cure3 thread and then follows the steps in it before posting further. The 1490 of amos1 had to have drastic measures taken for it to be accessed by Windows and made usable again. Most bricked units don't need any more than 'curing' and removal of corrupt files or reformatting correctly with RMPrepUSB.

Thank you, very much for the help.

I tried G7ToWin today, and got following info:

    Nuvi 14xx Series Software Version 6.20 ID:972
Also the Unit ID (only by PM if needed, its a LMT)

Then reading all about GarminCure3, but when it comes to
downloading of FW i am not 100% sure, wich one is for me.
It seems there are many FW version 6.20 for 14xx, and I cant
compare any of these, with my HWID ?
So could you please, point me the right way, or maybe even a link ?

So when i have the right FW, (as I understand it)
I will open the FW with GarminCure3, then make CURE FW and flash
the unit with Updater.exe, then it should show up in Windows (I hope)
Should I then, Safely disconnect my device, then reconnect again
in pre boot mode, and flash with original FW ?

Sorry for taking your time once again,
but for me, these steps are critical,
and its the first time I use these tools

After loading cure firmware you should see your device in Windows, Backup all the files and folders including the hidden /.System folder
Then format your device using rmprepusb as detailed in the GarminCure3 Tutorial
After that Create an empty folder named Garmin (do not put back any files)
    Then Load original firmware
After that use Webupdater to get back your Files.
Then Use GarminMapUpdater to get back your maps.

So im back again, with great news

I loaded cure FW, and the device poped up in Windows
    Then made a complete backup.

But after that, I made a foolish move by loading original FW again.
(saw in GarminCure3 thread this was next move, so i tried it)
(know by now, that i should have followed the tutorial in this thread)
And of course, that move did not work at all.
I was right back where I started

So load cure FW again, format with rmprepusb, create Garmin folder,
remove device, load original FW, update with WebUpdater,
then at last I used Garmin Express to get the new maps.
All went very well, and device seems to be up and running again, with 2014.30 maps

Only thing left would be to compare the backup I made with the "new" Garmin device.
And there are many miscompares. Also "critical" files like gmapbmap.img

Does anybody happend to know, wich files/folders I should be aware of/avoid to copy
    from the backup ?

Remember, I still have the one with broken screen, wich i can copy files from if needed.

Thank you all very much again, for your help so far, i am almost embarrassed,
that so many people are involved in this allready, it was not ment to be a big thing.

One more thing, that I just dont understand, all the "recently found" and "favorites"
are also back in the device, even after i formatted the whole drive, and havent used
anything from the backup yet ? Im not saying this is a bad thing, just dont understand...........

Actually the tut by kunix in cure3 thread also says to firstly remove suspect files and then reformat if necessary. It's often enough to ditch Voice, Text, Keyboards & maybe Vehicles too, all of which can be easily replaced by WebUpdater or GarminExpress as can LM maps and previously purchased map downloads. GPX and POI files can also be a problem, so if you're not sure it's easier to format with RMPrepUSB and start again.

By reloading the original firmware after the cure without removing the root-cause files or reformatting the devise will still be bricked.

Some devices retain settings in NonVol memory. Speaking of which, did you clear NV or at least hard reset as it seems not? If you didn't create an NV Backup, best do that now too.

Ok, I will try to use as many files as I can, from other devices backup I made in the past.
Garmin Express and Webupdater, dont have more updates for it, so i think thats the way.
Until now, the only thing I have added, is Basemap v5.01 (from my Nuvi 3490lmt)

Sorry but I dont know what NV is, or how to backup.
Do you also want me to reset device ?
Maybe I should make a backup of favorites etc. with Garmin Express before doing so ?

Yes, you should back them up if you want them, and yes it's good policy to at least hard reset whenever you intend changing firmware both before and after if possible. Some firmware version upgrades and downgrades will force a mandatory reset anyway, so it's best to back up your files beforehand in any case. 'Clear NV' is a just little more comprehensive i think, particularly if a device is running erratically.

You were right to copy the basemap, 5.01 is latest and it's not replaced by WU or GE.

NV backup/restore is described here: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]. If amos1 had a previous NV backup of region 41, his 1490 would have been working fully now and not partly crippled thru the loss of registration and unlock codes [that's probably what confused you earlier in this thread, all the stuff we were trying because he couldn't access Mass Storage Mode after curing it].

I wasn't a fan of GE at first because the early versions were flaky [and imo quite dangerous], but it now runs smoothly and downloads are quicker than with WU or MU. Under the 'Device' tab you can do basic backups and easily transfer favourites etc from one device to another also:

After format and when you update your unit this file is missing:

gmapbmap.img ( basemap ) you add it already on your unit
maps , you already add it on your unit

You don't have anymore your favorites so if you have backup of folder GPX than add it back on your unit but be cerful if is damaged.

When unit wont start this file is in 95% couse for this:
    Damage on:
    - text
    - keyboard
    - .img
    - voice
    - GPX

Sometime text file or keyboard don't update with webupdater or GE, so look if you have text and keyboard on your nuvi in folder text and keyboard.
If you have it, then you ready to navigate
If you wish, you can [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]
