    new Approach G5 --> Oregon 200

I bought a new Garmin G5 (golf gps), very cheap, but useless for me.
I intend to try to transform it into an Oregon 450. They share the same case and the same screen resolution but have different HWID: 896 for Oregon 450 and 1005 for Approach G5. Is it possible flashing the G5 with firmware of Oregon, or other Garmin handheld gps?
I appreciate if anyone can share or indicate any source mainly photos of oregon 450 so I can compare.

    You must look at PCB
see : [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]
Not sure it's the same for outdoor gps devices

Angelo, Approach G5 has PCB P/N 105-01356-00. However i can't find PCB number in Oregon 450 fw, maybe somebody with the device can get it from the unit itself.

    Neil,
I also could not identify the PCB P/N in the 450 fw. I have no more the 450, but the PCB P/N (that have similar screens as the Etrex30) is not informed in the Diagnostics Pages (see link). If you or anyone has any other tips on how to discover this P/N I'll stay more relaxed for flashing the G5, which I have two options: either turns it into 450, or sell your pieces (more likely), since that is useless as gps.

Sorry, if it's not in fw or in the units' diagnostics pages I can't help. Similar problem with 310 series as discussed in rambling fashion in the PCB P/N thread from this post on: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ].

Maybe you could try to convert the Approach to an Oregon x00 rather than an x50? In the junior model fw the PCB P/N is 105-01356-00:

Everything suggests that the G5 has the same hardware of the Oregon 400, not only by PCB P/N as well mentioned by Neil, but also by other research I've done about spare parts of these models.

The problem now is to get in pre-boot. Typically these models first have to enter in the Diagnost Page and from there the gps is recognized by the updater, but my
problem now is just that: how to enter the Diagnostic Page of G5 (rather, in pre-boot).

In the Oregons is from the satellite page, but I have tried several ways but could not (from the Initialization or internal menus). If anyone has any ideas will be very welcome..

Service cable, otherwise use sd to install the x00 fw, or just erase the G5 fw and eventually it will force system software missing.

I got a new gps . I managed to get in pre-boot after many attempts and installed the full firmware of oregon x00. It initializes normally, but the internal memory was changed to FAT, should be FAT32, as result the gps was not recognized neither by the Webupdater (not read garmindevice.xml) nor read by my operating system (Windows 8.1). But formatted as FAT 32 and before of rebooting, installing some basic files and folders of the Etrex30, was perfect. In the sequel it is recognized by the Webupdater normally as Oregon 200 (wanted a 400 or 450 lol), probably because it has no compass and barometer. Despite these limitations is still a great gps, because it has High-sensitivity receiver, supports Custom maps, JNX and has 1 GB of internal memory, plus slot microSD (oregon 450 have 850MB) and original Oregon 200 have only 24 MB of internal memory. Screen with very good visibility to sunlight, after all is a GPS for golfers, whose fields are the open sky. Tunes satellites quickly, as in 450, and indicates precision of 3 meters with ease. In Basecamp works like a charm, communication and transfer of tracks and maps is okay (USB 2.0).

@ddabcd277, I became very interested in your alternatives:
-"cable service"? Where to get or how to build one?
-"use sd to install the x 00 fw"? I only know the traditional way by gupdate, there is another as using the set of commands to manipulate regions? It would be possible a schema to delete regions in sequence and copy new content covering all the regions until the reboot? Sounds complicated and risky, as it would take a dump on both handsets, a true clone.
-"..or just erase the G5 fw and eventually it will force system software missing"? Delete all regions or by what method? On software missing would pre-boot?
or all of this by cable service?

Nice work Angelo. How about you write in detail a 'how to' [you've flashed with full x00 fw, did you also try hybrid with G5 boot and x00 rest?] and then we can add it to Tutorials.
