Depends on the size of the map I suppose Loly. I have an NA 1490 with a damaged USB socket. It cannot be connected in MSM to update AU maps. It happily accepts a map update from microSD to overwrite the existing AU map loaded in .System as gmapprom1.img every time without error. The map is ~230MB. I suppose maybe you were trying to update EU which is around 10 times that size. The other point is which unit were you using? I've found older units 200/300/600 seem to have limitations using SD commands. For instance 300/600 can only write about 27 commands at a time for region backup and will hang if the 27th one isn't 'reboot' so it has to be done in batches whereas modern units will write thru to rgn255. Perhaps older units have limited 'stamina' in copying from the card as well as writing to it?

If the USB port is broken it would make sense to keep all files that you can on the SD card and only keep on the unit files that cannot run on the SD
such as voices etc. It is not an ideal situation to have a nuvi with a broken USB but workarounds can be made.
If the USB is really broken you cannot flash in pre-boot mode. So if something happens to the Nuvi that needs a pre-boot flash the the Nuvi is Toast.

I agree Dasil. And you'd be aware from other posts of mine going way back that i'm an advocate of putting everything possible on sd. However, this 1490 owes me next to nix and accordingly i've used it solely for experimentation. If i brick it, so what? The mount, screen, case and battery are worth more than what i paid for it and it came with a GTM26 traffic receiver too. Although if i did brick it i would probably bite the bullet and reflow the usb connections 'cos that's what's wrong with it. It charges if i tape the charger lead to the back of the unit to put a bit of vertical stress on the usb header, it goes into msm for 20 seconds and then boots normally and will navigate perfectly as long as the tape holds fast. In fact it will stay in msm [or enter pre-boot] connected to the PC by putting gentle and steady sideways pressure on the header as well. However, the pressure must be maintained consistently and it's just impossible to do updates that way without a second pair of hands. I bought it on ebay from a guy who bought it in the States while on vacation. It was one of Garmin's refurbs in the blue and white box, cosmetically it's in pristine condition and the battery holds charge well.

@Dasilvarsa after reading the whole thread i managed to install the voices on the device with success!
@Neil I took your idea, and copy the map to the device. It worked perfect.
@lolypop I have an almost 500mb map, i guess it is working for this maps size.

Now the GPS is working fine and with maps in Internal Memory. Bad news is no matter what i do, USB connection doesn't work. I don't care now as the SD card update was a great method and GPS charges fine so, thanks everyone!! You just saved my GPS :D

Never going to fit all EU on my 2GB US/AU 1xxx units Loly. Maybe EU 1300 has more space, but I can't even get all NA on mine 'cos without any files at all there's only 1.85GB free and the full NA image is now 1.88GB. It's still got the oem US & CA 2011.10 on board and I haven't updated the 1490 for AU recently, but there was only ~18MB free even with the smaller old AUNZ CN so i have sent this successfully:

    del,0:/.System/JCV/D1279060A.sum
    del,0:/.System/JCV/D1279060A.JCV
    copy,1:/D3531080A.JCV,0:/.System/JCV/D3531080A.JCV
    copy,1:/gmaptz.img,0:/.System/gmaptz.img
    copy,1:/gmapprom1.img,0:/.System/gmapprom1.img
    copy,1:/TrafficProvider.xml,0:/.System/TrafficProvider.xml
    reboot

    Update.log shows:

nüvi 14xx Series Software Version 6.20, UID: 3xxxxxxxx7, HWID: 3xxxxxxxx7
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Parsing "del,0:/.System/JCV/D1279060A.sum"
    Success
    Parsing "del,0:/.System/JCV/D1279060A.JCV"
    Success
    Parsing "copy,1:/D3531080A.JCV,0:/.System/JCV/D3531080A.JCV"
    Success
    Parsing "copy,1:/gmaptz.img,0:/.System/gmaptz.img"
    Success
    Parsing "copy,1:/gmapprom1.img,0:/.System/gmapprom1.img"
    Success
    Parsing "copy,1:/TrafficProvider.xml,0:/.System/TrafficProvider.xml"
    Success
    Parsing "reboot"

So it's now got ~38MB free with AUNZ 2014.20 and the other files updated.

    @tik0
Your problem is always going to be that you don't know how much free space you have, whereas i can connect in msm long enough to ascertain that and also see files names and their size to know what to delete to make more space. You'll be playing 'blind man's bluff' unfortunately, but if you run out of space you will get an error in update.log telling you that there's insufficient space to copy.

Really in your case you are probably better off putting as much as possible on a microSD card like dasilvarsa recommended so as to minimise the risk of bricking. Unlike you, I can at least still access preboot with difficulty and i also have the option to repair the usb socket.

You seem to be sorted now, so i'll mark this thread as solved.

@Neil Yes, i don't know how much space free does the unit have left, i though that non-vol menu might show but it isn't what i thought.

Does anyone knows where are the poi's that are transferred from the SD card to the Nuvi stored? I accidently copy some of them to the device and i cannot found them, i don't want the ones that tell me where to check if my car lights are on.. I've tried:

    Code:
Please Login or Register to see the links
It seems that i'm shooting in the dark. Any ideas? (The names above are some of the poi's im trying to delete)

    EDIT
I found out the location. They were with the same name in the SD card but not inside Garmin folder, instead they were in ROOT/Poi, like this:

    Code:
Please Login or Register to see the links
But the command del,0:/Poi/*.gpi just doesn't work. Anyway, thanks!

Regardless of the case of the microSD folder [poi, POI, Poi etc], the folder will be named Poi when you transfer any .gpi files from it to the unit. That folder will be created exclusively in the root of the unit memory using that method. Again regardless of the case of the folder name in update.txt and the case of folder name in the unit, the command will be executed successfully [i.e. POi will find poI, Poi, POI, pOi etc and vice versa]. However, the gpi file name must be exact and wildcard '*' will not work as you found.

Prior to you posting the edit above, using a NA 1300 i did some tests. This is the update.log result for various commands where the folder Poi was originally created by accepting the nuvi's request to transfer gpi files from the microSD's POI folder:

nüvi 13xx Series Software Version 6.20, UID: 3xxxxxxxxx, HWID: 3xxxxxxxxx
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Parsing "del,0:/Poi/AUS-Airports_Jan12.gpi"
    Success
    Parsing "del,0:/POI/Redlight Speed Cameras.gpi"
    Success
    Parsing "del,0:/Poi/*.gpi"
    Error
    Parsing "del,0:/poi/SCDB_Oceania.gpi"
    Success
    Parsing "del,0:/pOi/Schools ACT.gpi"
    Success
    Parsing "del,0:/poI/Schools NSW.gpi"
    Success
    Parsing "reboot"

So if you still have the original files on the microSD it's easy to choose the correct name to delete them. If not then it's blind man's bluff/shooting in the dark.

A little bit of [maybe] interesting trivia. As well as the case of the poi folder not being of any concern to the unit, the actual naming of it doesn't matter to it. You could name it 'xxxx' and dump it in the Garmin folder or .System folder and the unit can still find and read the files.

But there is nothing problem to use copy command for creation backup and then on PC to seek in device context for needed files.

A little bit to your interesting trivia. On some device if you copied OEM POI to POI folder you obtain only string in Extras. But if you put it in other folder you can see a separate OEM POI icon in search menu also. And your trivia is suitable for Jpeg file too...

I agree with Giomen wildcards are included in the copy command

    Command format: copy,<source path>,<destination path>,<pattern>

Maybe someone downunder with a lot of free time on his hands could try and let us know (nudge nudge wink wink)
