Searched this site but could not find the answer..........
so here goes.
Is is possible to "clone" my Nuvi 510 onto an SD card and use that to connect to GarminExpress, update/get the latest maps?
Can I then simply transfer (sections of) maps to my unit using Mapsource?
I never put maps on my unit I donot use anyway.
I have bought the official Lifetime Update a few years ago, so I would like to use that to get updated maps. but if I make my Nuvi510 a Zumo510 agian. I will run into the problem I started this thread with.... GarminExpress will force a Firmware Update prior to loading maps...

Return your Nuvi to Original Firmware.
Use Webupdater to update everything that you need including the Firmware.
Use GarminMapupdater.exe to update maps, Make sure that you select Unit and Computer.
Now Everyting is up to date. Make a backup of the whole Nuvi and Memory Card (If applicable).
Now convert to Zumo.
When in Zumo mode do not connect the Nuvi to Garmin Servers at all.
If you need to update Maps you will have to follow the procedure again.
Take the Backup of Nuvi Internal Flash that you made above and copy it to an empty flash drive.
You can use the Flashdrive to connect to garmin servers.
You can edit Garmindevice.xml to change the firmware level to satisfy the servers about firmware update.

Right! (or wrong...)
I'm sure I am doing something wrong here...
-updated my nuvi 510
-used GarminExpress to create a backup (only a GPX file???) and wrote that to a SD card in my laptop
-copied the enture content of my Nuvi to the SD card as well (windows explorer, copy all)
-fired up WEBUPDATER.EXE
-it recognises the card as if it is the Nuvi510
-select Western Europa, write to C: disc on PC (Programdata/Garmin/Maps)
-it gets *****ing, downloading for about 1 hour and then it says it failed to update the maps.
-The folder is empty...
If you have a fix (and the time..), much appreciated!!!

Try again with the Nuvi Connected
I hope you used GarminMapUpdater.exe (which version?)
It will take long, It's a lot of data, do it at night!
You need to have Basecamp installed on your PC if you want to install to computer.

Just so I understand and do things right.
-I will make my Nuvi 510 a Zumo 510
-connect the unit to my PC via USB
-have the SD card with the copy of the original Nuvi 510 in my PC
-run GarminMApupdater (v3.2.2), select SD version of the nuvi (you wrote I should not connect the Zumo 510 to the servers of Garmin)
PS what did you mean by
"You can edit Garmindevice.xml to change the firmware level to satisfy the servers about firmware update"
Dankie!

If you want to update the maps you need to make your unit a Nuvi 510 Not a Zumo
