No luck getting Nuvi 50(LM) into pre-boot. Device was accidently formatted through PC. Pressing top left corner of screen and holding while pressing pwr button. Only get to the Garmin logo. No indication of pre-boot mode success.
Any clues?

You will need to load cure firmware to enable Mass Storage Mode and re-format it correctly anyway, so open the cure RGN in Updater.exe then follow the advice in (1) in the note in red in initial post:

Many units can be put into pre-boot mode by holding the screen in the correct spot and plugging in the mini/microUSB with the lead already connected to the PC [preferably a rear port]. This method does not require the device to be turned on by the on/off button.

I have read the instructions and my interpretation is that there is no point in doing anything else until I have succeeded to get the device into pre-boot state. I also assume that there will be some sort of message on the screen indicating pre-boot state. Once this works I would take the next step running the software as described.
I have tried to press and hold left upper corner of screen while connecting USB cable (already connected to PC). I have also tried to press and hold screen while pressing power button (which is actually what is specified for Nuvi 50 in the beginning of this thread).
When I accidently formatted by device I also removed the partition through Windows Administration Tools->Storage still thinking it was my SD card. Could this have caused more serious damage than just the formatting?
For nuvi 50 (5x ) no power button in tutorial in first post
You must install garmin usb drivers from garmin page, without this drivers updater will not see your device and on your nuvi screen you will not see when device is in pre boot you will see this only in updater for 10 seconds.
If you don't start flash in this 10 sec, your device will no longer be in pre boot.
If you can't read basics info, how will you repair your device?
You get preboot after dragging the .rgn in Updater.exe always pressing left upper corner on the screen, preboot lasts few seconds (4/5 max) so you must have already ticked the USB option and you must be ready to click ok when Updater will see your nuvi.Quote:

You don't have any other options, alternative is to send it to Garmin and some $$.
In my Updater.exe thread everything is explained, there are pictures too.
No problems formatting nuvi, cure works fine and if you have files backup, it's a few minutes task to restore it.

Pre-Boot for navigators nuvi 5x0 [and zumo 2x0]:
1. Turn off the navigator.
2. Click and hold the upper left corner of the screen.
3. Click and hold down the power button.
Posted photos show some text above logo when entering pre-boot, that was the rationale for my conclusion. Did not find any part of instructions -explicitly- saying no indication will be visible on screen. You may want to improve instructions.Quote:

Anyway, now I know better.
I don't think you do know any better and shooting the piano player is never a good idea mate, unless you actually can play it better yourself. The instructions for nuvi 50 [part of the xx series] are as follows in Post #1:Quote:

No mention of 'power button' in those instructions, as there is for the fundamentally different nuvi 5x0 which you quoted. Therefore the default method to turn on your 50 in preboot mode is what's applicable as i first pointed out to you in post #52. That's shown in red at the top of the list for very good reason. As to the text shown on the device screen, it's when flashing with updater.exe when 'Loader' and 'Software Loading' show. Most units in preboot show nothing at all, some may show 'system' depending on their state but that's all.Quote:
Pre-Boot for navigators nuvi 30, 4x, 5x:
1. Turn off the navigator.
2. Press the upper left corner of the screen.
3. Turn on the navigator still holding the upper left corner of the screen
If you wish to get world-best advice on fixing Garmin devices best play a bit nicer and lose the attitude, otherwise look elsewhere. Our instructions will remain unchanged regardless. This thread has been viewed by thousands of members and guests the vast majority of whom it's reasonable to assume have a bricked device but have fixed it without even having to post.
Say sorry a bit and we might still help you. Fixing a badly formatted device is actually one of the easiest fixes.
I'm sorry, will try the correct procedure tomorrow. I never questioned the technical competence of the piano player.Quote:

Nuvi 50LM up and running again.
Expected result even without you having to ask further and thanks for reporting back. :))
