Well, to be honest i have no real trouble now that i've had the practice. It's really all about technique and speed because you have to do it all in a matter of seconds, maybe 10 all-up before it'll exit preboot and start the calibration mode. Have the usb cable already connected to rear port of PC. Hold unit upside-down in your left hand, left thumb firmly in the unit's extreme top RH corner [now lower left], have updater open and visible, USB cable to hand ready to plug in. Slide switch to on then very quickly back to lock, the instant the logo appears plug in the mini-usb [it's easier to do if the unit's inverted 'cos you can easily see the socket], watch updater and hit enter or click OK the instant you see the unit details appear. That way you'll get it i'm sure, works for me better than fussing with finger pushing anyway. You can let go of the screen when 'Loader' appears of course.

Thanks, Neil. If there's a 10 second window, I should be allright. The setup on my desk is exactly as you described and I have practised the sequential steps with my bricked bricked 765 unit (the one really bricked that is, see [Only registered and activated users can see links. Click Here To Register...]...). Not that it revived it, but it may give me enough practise to be well prepared by the time I receive the other bricked 765 from my friend. ;)

Below some information that may help others who try to flash FW into a nüvi 7x5 with Updater.exe and fail. I used a nüvi 765T, but assume the principle applies equally to the entire 7x5 series (and possibly 7x0 series too).
First off, the procedure to get the nüvi 7x5 into pre-boot mode is as follows:
1. Press and hold the top right hand corner of the screen.
2. While holding, switch on the nüvi by sliding the power switch to the 'ON' position and then immediately sliding it fully right to the 'LOCK' position.
3. As soon as the splash screen appears, connect the USB cable.
My problem was that, in pre-boot mode, I was unable to fully complete the flash process. The progress bar would advance up to 98 or even 99% and then freeze, followed by an error message a few seconds later.
After many attempts, I found out that the flash process would only complete if the power switch was moved out of the 'LOCK' position back into the neutral (mid) position during the flash process.
For efficiency reasons, I tried to move the switch from the 'ON' position to the mid position in step 2 above already, but then I was unable to get the unit into pre-boot mode. It apparently has to be done as an additional step during the flash.
Not sure if I had to post this information here or in the Firmware section. Mods please feel free to copy or move this post to another section if deemed more appropriate there.

You're correct that all the 7 series nuvis need the power switch to go to the lock position and won't enter preboot without that step. I haven't had a particular problem with flash not completing like that but it's a handy hint to know to move back it to the central position during the flash, thanks for posting that SF.
Here is definitely the right place, i've added a note into initial post pointing to these 7xx specific posts because they are quite different and difficult for preboot attainment.

I'm in need of a little help with my friend's Gamin Oregon 400t and 450i. I've been reading hours of solutions for "system file missing" issue, and finally arrived on this site. It seems like, I need to enter my devices into pre boot mode....which I cannot achieve. I've tried the the way it was suggested on this page (Hold down power button at startup) all it does is, that it shows the garmin logo for about 30 sec. then it shows "system file missing" then turns off. As I understand, this is a necessary step in order to use GarminCure. If anyone could give me advice how to enter pre boot mode on these devices, I'd greatly appreciate it. (does the unit needs to be connected with usb cable while I'm pressing power? Does the external memory card needs to be inserted?
Thanks, for any advice you can give me!

In that 30 secs after you first hold the power button down, a 'boot block' is occuring and it's in pre-boot mode. That's all the time you have to start the flash with Updater.exe. It seems that your problem is not getting into preboot but flashing the Cure3 firmware in time. Have the fw loaded to Updater.exe, leave it's GUI open and visible on your desktop, select the radio button next to 'USB Device' and then put into preboot and immediately connect the oregon to a usb lead already connect to a rear port of PC. Watch for the unit's detail to appear in the window next to 'USB Device' and then press OK immediately. Hold the power button until the flash finishes. Post in Cure 3 thread for additional help if needed: [Only registered and activated users can see links. Click Here To Register...]. Read that thread and these first: [Only registered and activated users can see links. Click Here To Register...] and [Only registered and activated users can see links.
