As was mentioned earlier, Garmin has an interest in selling the GPS, not the Map.
Garmin may be distracted and clumsy, but not stupid
The withdrawal of the offending Firmware is the confirmation.

Not sure if there is a specific thread for this, but the Montana v5.60 firmware, has been removed.

I've just tried to upgrade to 5.6 with Garmin Webupdater : I was told last firmware (5.4) was already installed on my device.
You won't get oregon 5.60 or montana 3.70 that way anymore. Not WU, GE or MyDashboard. Go directly to the firmware link:
Code:http://download.garmin.com/software/Montana_WebUpdater__560.gcd
http://download.garmin.com/software/Oregon6x0_WebUpdater__370.gcd
Found following information, which surely points into that direction. Source:Quote:

If they add new improved map authentication method then he must update all device and i don't count on this.
p.s.
If they add also this lock in nuvi 350 FW, then he can add also support for img greater then 2Gb ;)
I agree with you Loly. There is a huge 'back catalog' of discontinued devices which already use the gma authentication in their current firmware. Too big a job and the associated problems which will occur if they screw up the updates that will result in countless 'ex-warrenty' claims for quite old 'bricked' devices allowable under the Fair Trading/Consumer legislation in many countries. I just don't think they'll go there. Be a ballsy decision if they do i reckon .....
These Devices are sold without preloaded maps that's why I think Garmin is trying to tighten up on authentication.
Selling maps for these devices is a potentially large and profitable revenue stream.
I don't think you can even buy LM Card for a device sold without preloaded Maps.
