This Garmin nuvi 780 Where2 hwid 0872. Likely need a firmware hwid 0872. 075401000xxx.rgn ---> 087201000xxx.rgn
Hi guys, new here, and somewhat new to Garmins.
I recently acquired a Nuvi 780 @ a freight recovery auction. It worked, but it looks like it belonged to a rental company, and possibly had custom firmware as many features were missing. Software version did say 2.90.
To recover the missing features, I attempted to use webupdater, and it said there were no updates available. So I tried copying a 760 GUPDATE.GCD to the garmin folder (onboard storage), but it ignored it, and booted as usual. I downloaded the nuvi760_490 firmware, extracted the rgn, and used updater.exe to flash it in USB pre-boot mode. It uploaded, said the update was successful. The device went to "LOADER LOADING..." and hung. Forced a reboot, and now it says "System Software Missing". I tried the fixes mentioned around the web with numerous firmware versions including CURE, but I'm stuck.
Cant hard reset, cant get to screen calibration mode, Cant get into mass storage mode of any kind. I CAN get into pre-boot usb mode, flash with updater.exe, but it never gets past "Loader Loading" and is stuck in this loop.
Another thing I've noticed is updater.exe will only upload the rgn if its named "075401000XXX.rgn", if I remove the XXX's and replace with the version, it says no updates are available and quits.
Is it toast? What is boot.bin and fw.bin? Do these need to be renamed and uploaded also?
Thanks for any help!

Do you create backup before you update your nuvi?
If you have backup from this nuvi, you can look in garmindevice.xml for HWID, or if you have gupdate.gcd in backup, you can upload and we will see how can we help you.
Try add this number:
075401000270.rgn
084401000270.rgn

I'm afraid that the device was flashed with a wrong firmware, so checking the HWID by flashing RGNs or using g7towin is likely to give false results, as in both cases the HWID is reported by the bootloader, which could be designed for a different device.
Can you send me a PM with the UnitID of your device? (is should be show by updater.exe).
Oh, you can't probably send PMs as you have to few posts... I'll ask catymag to fix it.

I took 075401000490.rgn, and i renamed it to: 087201000490, and it did upload, but still hung @ loader loading... Reboot, and back to system software missing
Unfortunately, no backup
I renamed 075401000490 to 084401000490, and updater.exe just said "No updates available for your product."
PM Sent
Thanks again guys! Maybe there is hope yet.

Your UnitID belongs to a nuvi 760 device, so you should use HWID=754 firmware, I think.
Can you please clarify this?
If you flash the original HWID=754 firmware with updater.exe, what happens? Does it show "system software missing"? Or does it boot and then show "LOADER LOADING ..." and hang? In the first case it's likely that the flash chip is broken. In the second it looks like the GCD file is corrupt. Then using GarminCure3 to get into the mass storage mode and remove the GCD.
I create for you cure FW and already rename rgn to 0872
[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]
If you have after flash with cure folder in pre boot access to mass storage please upload your gupdate.gcd here and then remove it from your nuvi to Pc
After you do this flash in pre boot with folder original and if all go ok your nuvi will work.
The unit says Nuvi 780 on the back of it.
To clarify what is going on... I can flash the unit in preboot mode, and when uploader.exe completes, the nuvi then says "Loader Loading...". However it never does anything else. I eventually give up, and reboot it, and it goes back to "System Software Missing".
I was able to flash with the Cure FW, but it still hangs on "Loader Loading..." after completion. Reboot goes back to "System Software Missing" with no mass storage available.
