154_backup.bin from my nuvi 2599 is just 2048 kb.
Does that sound reasonable? (I did see post #28).

The backup log says success, and I repeated the process with identical results.

Maybe it's reasonable, you can check it in a hex reader but it'll certainly be encrypted however and you'll see apparently empty padding. Nonvol region sizes vary between unit series and what you're seeing is the total available size of the region [2 MiB or 2048 KiB or 2,097,152 bytes] not the size of the actual information contained in it. The example is Post #28 is for a US/EU 3790 with HWID 1101 and it's nonvol region [rgn41] size is indeed 6,272 KiB or 6.125 MiB.

My device is a Nuvi 57LM with HWID 2087 and SW version 430
I think to have followed the backup procedure and received the log file:
    nüvi 57 Software Version 4.30, UID: 390850xxxx, HWID: 390850xxxx
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Parsing "rrgn,154,2:/154.bin"
    Success
    Parsing "reboot"

The file in the root of the SD card is 2048KB
However, the file name is 154.bin instead of 154.backup.bin
    Is this a problem?

I am having trouble with step 4. When I start rgn_tool all the checkboxes for the firmware sections are unchecked and greyed out.

Should it be auto-detecting my GPS? My GPS (Garmin 2689 HWID 1948 SWV 8.20) is indeed plugged in to the computer by USB and is accessible in Windows (10) via explorer.

RGN_Tool is NOT used directly with your device and nor can it detect a device in any way. It is strictly a firmware manipulation tool designed solely to view, save or replace various components [*.bin files] of a firmware file [*.rgn or *.gcd]. In this thread it's being used solely for extracting the firmware's boot.bin [Ldr.bin] to use in executing the txt command to save region 41 or 154 as a bin file [in your nuvi 2689 it's the latter region number, saved to '2' for the microSD path].

Read the tut in Post #1 carefully again. Best you do it yourself but if you're still totally confused one of us will make you a kit suitable for your HWID of 1948.

    Hmm,
Maybe my question should have been, if RGN_Tool reads the "firmware boot.bin" then where is that "boot.bin" file found? (I tried to read and comprehend every single word of post#1 but although I _am_ computer literate, I'm still stuck).

And I agree... I'd like to do it myself.

Thanks for the wink ... it made me laugh to myself instead of banging my head on the wall.
    Here's a picture of what I'm seeing...

    rgntool01

And if I check off the box (e.g. for Sect. 1) and try a 'save' then I get an empty (0 byte) file.

Have you dragged the (Firmware) gupdate.gcd in it?
    Read again please.
