I believe it's an attempt by Garmin to get users is some parts of the world to pay for something they give free to other parts of the world. The principle being, i think, much like the supermarket chains which sell the same items a percent or so higher in affluent areas. The supermarkets at least can say that it's because of lower turnover that they need to get more profit per item out of the 'dearer' shop, Garmin doesn't have the luxury to use that excuse. Setting the ecoRoute enablement according to the localisation of the unit's intended market geographic is simply a sneaky way of squeezing a bit more profit out of some markets in which Garmin has less margin and/or has assessed as markets which can afford or are likely to pay an extra 10 bucks[only $10 i think?] for ecoRoute Purchase or even better get them to fork out 100 smackers for HD. That's not really a criticism at all, it's a grudging admiration of them. After all, [b]'All's fair in Love and Marketing"[b].

I'm new to the forum but I've had a Garmin 350 for long time. I use a Kingston 8gb now a Kingston 16gb sd card for my tunes. Last week I decided that the price was right for a 3490ltm so I pulled the trigger. The 3490 is really nice and it has the lifetime map and HD traffic but I sorely miss mp3 playback during a route. I used Garmin Express to update the map to 2015.10. and the firmware is 8.20. I have Windows 8 and I see the .system directory with the manifest file

I changed these two lines to

    0:/Garmin/DeviceConfig_MP3_Enabled.xml,67247a5d
    0:/Garmin/DeviceConfig_VideoPlayback_Enabled.xml,67247a5d

But I still require the media player app to play my tunes

I can supply a blank Kingston 8GB Fat32 SD card. I understand it's possible to flash the card and that would load the media player app. I did experiment with the card from my 350 and it changed the map and used the card instead of internal and then when I removed the card the map used the internal one again.

So my question is mainly what is the process to flash the card? Which firmware is the correct one? If it does not work is it safe to assume when I pull the sd card it will return to stock?

    Thanks

It's not possible to enable simply by modifying like that. Region 140 has to be modified, and that's done as explained in the initial post by extracting a copy of rgn140 as a .bin file, modifying that with the app and then flashing it back to overwrite the region. Read the first post again very carefully.

    So far
    1.) Open RGN_Tool --> drag nuvi34xx_GCDFile__820.gcd to RGN_Tool
    2.) Save boot.bin and HWID # 1376
    3.) Rename boot.bin to LDR.bin
    4.) Extract Garmin+Updater+files 2
\Garmin Updater Files\3xxx series enable feature application folder
    \Garmin Updater Files\For backup region 140\For backup region 140\Garmin\Updater\xxxx\update.txt
    5.) Rename xxxx to
    \Garmin Updater Files\For backup region 140\For backup region 140\Garmin\Updater\1376\update.txt
    6. Copy LDR.bin to
    \Garmin Updater Files\For backup region 140\For backup region 140\Garmin\Updater\1376\LDR.bin
the only other file in this directory is update.txt
7.)Format the sd card Fat32, then copy Garmin\Updater\1376\
    to the sd card
8.) turn off 3490 , insert card, power up 3490, it's supposed to boot the card but it does not.

    Thanks for the help

Extract this directly onto a clean microSD. Ensure unit is fully OFF [hold on button until prompted]. Insert card into 3490 and boot. Loader will appear on screen, when unit boots itself remove card and look in root for reg_140.bin. Proceed with rest of instructions.

Tested on 3490: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

    That worked like a charm...

    9) Remove the SD Card, insert to PC and you will see reg_140.bin
    10) Open Mod 3xxx.exe and browser to reg_140.bin
    When I open reg_140.bin up Mod 3xxx.exe,
Here are the defaults do I need to make any changes?

    (see picture)

    Thanks for the help

Check everything except ecoRoute HD & Purchase definitely as said above. You can also un-check Custom Main Menu but it doesn't matter. You must check Mp3 & Video Player boxes for those to work as you've stated you want.

Dont enable ecourute HD and Purchase

Thanks for clearing that up. I never used the tool before so I wanted to make sure I understood what I doing because I didn't want to have trouble. The first time I tried I just unchecked the the ecoRoute HD, and ecoRoute Purchase. Then it hit me that I needed to check the ones I needed. Once I did that it was SUCCESSFUL The tunes are back! Also the media player app is sweet a lot better than the old one in the 350. All I need now is to mod the Dock for an audio out jack and I will be in business.

Big thanks to NEIL, catymag, 3490LMT, and lolypop000 I really appreciate the help...

When you mod the dock for an audio Jack could you please post pictures and instructions here.
I'm very interested in this modification.
