Default GPSMAP 78 isn't recognised after doing update!

Just did an update on my unit and now it is unrecognised by BaseCamp, Webupdater & MYGARMIN(on PC and MAC). When I plug in USB cable the unit asks whether I want to go into Mass Storage Mode, I click yes then it displays Garmin and the USB Icon on the unit but either computer doesn't see it. MAC Disk Utility doesn't see it (used to show up as a Disk called "Garmin" and the SD Card showed as "(NULL)") nothing comes up now. The unit still works but all waypoints etc are gone.
This all started when I updated basecamp, I lost the ability to see Bluechart on basecamp after update, I then backed up my unit on basecamp and also made a disk image in MAC Disk Utility, proceeded then to update the unit itself thinking that basecamp software needed the new web update on the unit to be installed.

Now all I have is an empty unit that tells me where I am but has no maps (No BaseMap as well), no waypoints, tracks or routes.

There is this note in 62/78 software updates page :

IMPORTANT: if upgrading from a software version less than 3.40 you must follow these steps for future BaseCamp Compatibility:
If you are a user of BaseCamp now, or plan to be in the future, you must follow these steps to ensure your data is protected during this software update:
Connect your handheld unit to a computer and launch BaseCamp. Transfer all tracks, routes and waypoints to BaseCamp.
Delete the /Garmin/GPX folder from the handheld's mass storage.
Update the handheld's software via WebUpdater and reboot the handheld.
Reconnect the handheld to a computer and transfer your data from BaseCamp back to the handheld.

This is probably the reason you lost your data.
Probably is better you reverse it back to a previous frmware, use your backup then and repeat the whole updating procedure.

Those links redirected me to a shop and buy maps page on the garmin site.
I have used the updater and an .rng file (2.80) using the up cursor on the unit to force it to USB Mass storage, have all my waypoints and tracks I need but still no maps.
Diagnostics pass everything but BMap Chk fails. BASECAMP shows the Global Basemap as installed and unlocked (doesn't show on GPS unit). I have VPC022R_v1300 on a 4Gb SD card and it doesn't show in either Basecamp or on unit. If I go through setup on the unit and go to the select map page the screen just goes blue, if I press Enter the unit turns itself off. I'm running BaseCamp (3.3.2) and WebUpdater on MAC OSX 10.6.8. All PC exe's are being run on XP SP3 on my MAC through BootCamp partition. VPC022R_v1300 was downloaded through noeman along with the gimunlock etc.

I think you missed the above while reading Catmag's reply. In your reply I don't see you mention restoring from backup first.

Yeah sorry didn't mention that, I did backup and restore and have all my waypoints, tracks, and routes but no maps!! Maybe I stuffed something up along the way,, what is the basemap file called and where should it be on the the units memory?? If there is no BaseMap would that stop the map .img file on my SD card working?? Is there any way I can get it back seeing as Basecamp still shows it??

To see your Bluechart (in sd in a Garmin folder) use Homeport

Basecamp isnt made to display Bluecharts

BlueChart maps like VPC022R doesn't appear in BaseCamp. You should use HomePort instead as catymag suggested. Seems however that you're on a Mac and then you should try [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

[Only registered and activated users can see links. ] isn't the perfect choice for a GPSMAP 78. There's a lot of "Vision" data that the GPSMAP 78 can't handle and that storage space is then wasted in the unit or at the memory card. Have you tried [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] ?

The benefits with a BlueChart g2 Vision chart in a GPSMAP 78 would be that it contains higher granularity in depth soundings plus more POIs for land based objects. All BlueChart g2 Vision uses Garmin NT compression and that may slow down map rendering and screen refresh time in a handheld units with slower CPUs.

BlueChart g2 are all non-NT maps and gives faster response times.

You made something wrong flashing it, I suggest to hard reset it and reload the software- Be sure your batteries are charged.
Remove any gupdate .gcd from your unit or sd, open your Garmindevice.xml and change in it your software version to a previous one, save it. Plug your 78 to your pc USB and use Webupdater to reflash it. Wait till your unit has completely loaded the firmware and restart itself. Hard reset it again.

Did as you instructed, the only difference is the unit didn't start by itself after webupdater had power up manually. Still no map, still powers down when hitting enter on the choose map page after getting a blank blue screen.
