Sorry for this opinion, because i'm sure you GW guys have far more riding experience than i have. However i do have to question the wisdom of disabling something which is essentially for your own safety and those around you. There are quite enough external dangers and distractions already imo without adding the personally-added [self-inflicted] risk of using navigation buttons and menus while riding. It's quite bad enough to be doing it in a car or truck but seems downright foolhardy to do it on a bike. Apart from anything else, what would your Insurer do if they find out [and they will likely find out] that you have 'safe mode' disabled when you caused an expensive accident? They would probably 'wipe you like a dirty nose' is the simple answer. Sorry again for saying that, but i really do believe it's better to pull over, even if you are leading a push and have 20 bikes behind you. Maybe more so in that case.

Rather than moving the 'on the move nav-disabling override discussion' to another thread here, i think it should be terminated in Noeman.

It's ok jinx, the mention of the other forum isn't the problem really. The issue for me is mostly about safety of any inexperienced rider who maybe would think it's ok to disable what is a protective feature [albeit somewhat inconvenient at times]. That's a strong personal opinion and really not a 'moderator' opinion because this forum is all about the free and open exchange of information. In that respect I think it's enough that the other 'darker' side of doing such a modification has been disapprovingly expressed and we can let ppl make up their own minds. If someone wants to cut the speed sense wire or do some other mod, be it on their own head now.

Thank you Neil for your opinion.
My point of view about the wisdom of disabling the buttons of navigation menu is little different.
I could agreee to your decision to terminate a discussion about self made of weapons or wheeling instructions or some other horrible/illegal practices, but I think that Noeman is a technical Forum and we are only doing a technical work about firmware and cablings.

I think that knoledge open the street to knoledge and this is the only way the World can grow up. Censorship has never been a solution.

What you are trying to defend is just covered by intelligence, driving license and nous. A message on the screen of navigators also remember to the drivers to manage it with prudence while driving.

My GoldWing has 60 (sixty) buttons on the cockpit and most of them are multi-function. You can ride this bike using, simoultaneously, Navigator, Radio, CB, Compact Disk, MP3 reader, Intercom, looking at nice girls and, above all, you can easily interact with your external navigator (TomTom in my case). While riding.

Please don't feel my words agaist yon, because they are not. I only think that too often someone wants to decide the color of the pants we must dress in the morning, but this is not often necessary. This is the reason why a lot of GoldWingers wants to disable this function.

First I agree with both of you. I believe that I am an adult and therefore responsible for my actions. I also believe that there are people that can't chew gum and walk at the same time but that doesn't mean you outlaw gum unless you live in NY city. I can tell you that if you try to use the nav, enter an address or find a poi, while moving you are going to get hurt.

The purpose for these mods was to allow me to activate the nag if I forgot to do so before i pulled out. I find in many cases that to be safer than pulling over to the side of the road.

now here are two links one to a simple override mod and one to an automatic activator.

    @carlinux
I take all that on board and in fact did weigh up the opposing opinion, essentially as you've stated, before i made the first post arguing against doing this for all and sundry to see and replicate. Because if kunix assists you blokes with this, a sw patch WILL happen. If it's possible, he can do it i know. A lot of what you've stated is already acknowledged in one or the other of my posts above. You've said:

    Sounds similar to me.

    You said:

Somewhat similar ideals expressed there too.

Where we do seem to differ is firstly on this: the wisdom of giving inexperienced ppl the opportunity of adding a further distraction into the already myriad ones present when riding a complex machine such as a GW. Let's face it, it is no Vespa. You might call it censorship but that's not at all what i'd call it. To point out the dangers of adding another unnecessarily distracting task into the mix is another 'c' word: Concern. There is an aviation term, "Cockpit Overload". It's especially a problem for students and inexperienced pilots. Too much work and/or distractions and they will start 'load shedding' and sometimes the wrong tasks are overlooked with disastrous results. The very same problems apply to users of ground vehicles which is why there are laws against using mobile cell phones while driving, they are WAY too distracting. GPS's can be just as distracting imo and entering info on the move is really not to different from texting while driving.

The other issue which you didn't address is my concern about the [real or perceived] responsibility not only for your own safety, but for others. In the unlikely event that an experienced GW rider caused an accident [or the more likely event, where you're the victim of some uncaring bike-hating car driver's stupidity], how is it going to look when it's found that you have made an unauthorised modification? Regardless of your protestations that it didn't contribute to the accident, i think you'll find the insurers, and maybe the police, would have a contrary view. If you doubt that, why not contact your insurance company now and ask their view on your intended disabling of the navi's 'safe mode'.

Be assured that i don't take any of your comments personally and i hope you feel the same about mine. I don't think you are uncaring, but i do think that there is a possible human toll for these actions and if it can be avoided then it should be. A test of any 'progress in knowledge' is whether it is for the greater good. If worldwide, only one life is saved or one maiming prevented, by imposing a minor inconvenience on the rest of us, then so be it imo. And let's face it guys, THAT'S why the bl**dy navis are made to be non-operable while moving in the first place. Garmin & Honda knew what they were doing and they also know it wouldn't be popular, even though 'for the greater good'. The cynic in me might say that they didn't want to get sued for NOT including it too.

Finally, i'll reiterate that i said earlier:
The issue for me is mostly about safety of any inexperienced rider who maybe would think it's ok to disable what is a protective feature [albeit somewhat inconvenient at times]. MY personal opinion is "This should stop". The mod in me says "This may not be right but ppl can decide for themselves". Regardless, as a Moderator I will not move this discussion to it's own thread where it will be far more prominent than it is here. But nor will i influence you further as to whether you continue it here. I'm far from the highest power here though and others' actions are out of my control either way.

    No hard feelings guys.

    Neil

No hard feelings at all. I consider myself a guest here and do not wish to cause any problems. I am very grateful to the people like you and kunix that helped me.
Hopefully I will have things in the future to contribute to this board that are more agreeable to the board.

My request to more the post was because I felt it was ot.

Now to get back on topic. I really want to get this firmware hacked and I know you want the NT solution.

It could put a compilation of the steps for which we have not even gotten to run.

Because if we are surely not as the beginning and end have to pay to get the update, which is what I fear.

    regards

    Spanish:
Se podria poner un recopilatorio de los pasos a seguir para los que no lo hemos conseguido hacer funcionar aun.

Por que si no seguramente estaremos como al principio y al final haya que pagar para conseguir el update, que es lo que me temo.

    saludos

Help I think I bricked it.

Was playing with the firmware, was using the boot.bin and appeared to have bricked the nav.
Had been working on modifying the firmware nag screen for about a week. Had tried many changes
to find were I needed to be in the program without incidence until the last try.
After releasing the reset button with a new change screen went blank. Did not show boot screen
did not show loading from card.

Have tried disconnecting battery for 1/2 hr. have tried resetting with gupdate.gcd V4.50, and without card.
    No luck.

    Any ideas, any suggestions ?
