I probably confused you in that previous post referring to a 4GB CF card, your Navi maybe still can't see a map image even if it's the under the 'FAT16 file size limit' of less than 2 GiB on a 4 GB card re-formatted to FAT16, but it certainly can't see an image 2GiB or over on a card formatted FAT32 which is what you tried, 'cos it cannot see that big an image file even if it can recognise the FAT 32 format [the related SP 2610 can't].

Therefore, simplest way to test would be to just use a 2GB or less card formatted in default FAT16. The image is then restrained to no more that 1.9 GiB [~2,047,541,000 bytes] which is well under the limit of 2,147,483,647 bytes anyway. So you will need a gmap folder of any NA NT map and your original locked non-NT image which came with the bike, That's probably either 2005 or 2006 NT North America. If you have a later non-NT up to 2009 you can use that as long as it's an official locked image purchased on a card.

So in MapInstall, from the NT gmap folder generate a small image where you are in MB. Even a single tile will do. Send it to any usb stick or media card, then copy the img to your PC. Unlock if necessary with gimgunlock, then combine it and the locked non-NT image using GMAPTool to create a single gmapsupp.img to try on a 2GB CF in your Navi.
Deselect the non-NT before testing the search function.

Not confused... don't know enough about the intricacies of the hardware! One limitation is working with stuff target for MS systems on a Mac. Oh well.

    This is my current status:
    1. I have a 2GB CF card from Garmin with CN NA NT 2013.30 map which I created using Garmin's MapInstall and my own map for which I have an unlock code, but for another GPS unit (which I no longer own). That's in the bike right now, and works fine, albeit no POI search function (greyed out keyboard).
    2. I have the CF card that came with the bike, which I don't want to touch... I put it in a safe place. As far as I can tell, it has CN 2008/2009 non-NT map, as reported by the navi INFO/SYSTEM (by the way, INFO/MAPSOURCE, as listed in the menu in the 2006 Navigation System manual, no longer appears on the menu. Using that menu option, it listed all the map segments that were installed and active, and you could deselect the areas where you weren't traveling to "speed up system performance." Can't do that anymore... You could even deselect the "Honda Dealers" so they wouldn't appear! I guess Honda didn't like that option...).
    3. I have two 1GB Sandisk UltraII CF cards, and a 4GB ExtremeIV CF card. One of the 1GB cards is FAT16 (formatted by the camera I use), and the other is FAT32 (formatted by the Mac's DiskUtility). The 4GB is also FAT32 (default for >2GB cards).

So... to carry out the experiment as you suggest, I need to find another 2GB card and format it to FAT16. Would that be correct?

...or find some way of formatting the 4GB card to FAT16.

I don't know Neil... just tried looking at GMapTool for the Mac OSX, and it's a command line Beta version. Haven't done command line since MS DOS, a long time ago. Feeling frustrated.

    @gto49
But up to, format the card on your MacOSX in:
Disk Tools -> select the tab on the left -> right, erase -> select Format: MS-DOS (FAT) -> at the bottom, erase.

    I have a card prepared

Yup... did that. When I check on the disk, it's formated FAT32

I think that you should not take for it - as you have problems with formatting.
But everything you do on your own risk.

@magic999. Sorry, but your comment makes absolutely no sense to me.

Ron, maybe you'd find it easier to just dust off that old intel PC you spoke of earlier.

Provided the [so called] 4 GB card is less than 4096 MiB [it will be under 4000MiB, ~3.9GiB] Windows will allow it to be formatted in FAT16 [it just calls it FAT in the drop-down]. A partition size of more that 2GB is only a problem if used for MS-DOS booting.

    Right click the drive>Format>File System>FAT.

All 2 GB cards are factory formatted to FAT16, so you won't need to reformat a newly purchased card. 4 GB to 32 GB are FAT32, 64GB and over are exFAT. All can be reformatted to other FATs using either the built-in Windows tool or other free 3rd party software such as EaseUS. My personal opinion is that RMPrepUSB is best used for the internal flash memory of all Garmin devices and any cards used in them for absolute compatibility with the Garmin OS.

It will be easier for you to use GMAPTool in Windows too, because the win version has a GUI.

If you are at all uncomfortable about proceeding further with this there's no problem. Someone else may volunteer to test maybe. It's firstly going to involve making a RAW copy of your original CF card data on [preferably] another 2 GB card and testing that in the bike before combining the images. We could maybe try with the 4 GB card formatted to FAT but may have to create a 2GB partition on it to mimic a 2GB card. If that copy CF works normally, we'll then use it for combining the original non-NT and small NT images for further testing. All this is very untested and only based on 'pie-in-the-sky' theory but won't directly involve your original card.

Let me know if you're willing to go ahead or not.

Neil, I'm willing. Just bear with me...

I fired up the old WinXP box, as you suggested. I now have GMAPTool installed. Tried reformatting the 4GB card on the WinXP box- right-click/Format, drop-down only lists FAT32 and exFAT as choices. No FAT16. Tried reformatting anyway, got FAT32, as expected. So...

I checked the 1GB cards... one formatted as FAT32; the second as FAT16. Stuck the 4GB card in again, and XP reported 831MB free and FAT as the format. So I went for it... I hit format. When done, it was 4GB and FAT16! Weird, or what. When I checked the options again, FAT16 is not there... only FAT32 and exFAT.

So, now I have a 4GB card formatted to FAT16, and GMAPTool on the WinXP box.

My next step is to make a copy of the Garmin card. You mentioned RAW copy... any particular method in doing that?

    Try with Roadkil's RAW Copy:

I haven't used it with dissimilar sized drives before, so i don't know how that will go. If you have a problem, we'll have to create a 2GB partition, but one step at a time.

Hello Neil, I'm still at it. Just getting my WinXP set up again. Now I'm connected to the internet, and installing the programs I need. Getting all sorts of messages saying my stuff is outdated (XP is 12 years old and no longer supported by MS!).
