If that were true, GarminCure3 would literally kill devices with 100% reliability, as there would be no other ways to update the firmware.
But no, pre-boot mode has to work, because bootloader inside boot.bin is not patched.
You can flash some garbage instead of fw_all.bin and pre-boot mode would still work on 99% of Garmin devices (on GVN53 it won't, sadly). This proves that pre-boot is not implemented in fw_all.bin. And GarminCure3 patches only fw_al.bin.
The answer seems to be too obvious... Maybe I didn't understand you.

The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits.
Albert Einstein.
Yes, update.txt won't work. I thought it's quite obvious. As far as I remember GarminCure3-ed firmware doesn't even read a single file. That's why it helps when we a completely screwed up partition.
Up until a week ago I didn't even know about pre-booting Garmins. What does it actually do to the device and how does the GarminCure3 aid in recovering a corrupted device?
Kunix invented it so he would better explain, but in brief Cure3 is a 'stripped-down' fw which does not load map image files, voice files etc. This allows you to access the internal file system to reformat or to delete any corrupt file/s which cannot be loaded and therefore are preventing the unit from booting. The cure fw cannot boot the unit, merely allows it to be accessed for that purpose. The original full fw must then be loaded in pre-boot to complete that process and finally fresh necessary files are added.
Loly's question is valid, the method you used to access pre-boot for loading the cure should still work after it's been loaded.

I've come to the conclusion that, despite successfully pre-booting my nuvi multiple times prior to installing GarminCure3, some touchscreen or other unknown issue is preventing the device from pre-booting now and it is beyond fixing. I'm surprised I haven't worn a hole in the upper left corner of the screen by now. I've attempted multiple iterations of the power button, pushing other corners of the screen, pulling the USB cable in and out, you name, I've probably done it. I give up.
My situation is now like a scene from a war movie where the fatally wounded soldier tells his buddies to go on without him. Now I'll have to pull over and (DAMN!) ask for directions.
You have this unit open? Disconnect the battery for some hours, then retry.
