I understand that this is annoying... but I don't see any other options.
    Try doing the following:
    0) ensure your nuvi is flashed with any original firmware
    1) flash [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] every time you want to enter flash drive mode.

Btw, looks like I can make a cure that doesn't need an original firmware file at all, the only requirement is that the device is flashed with a normal firmware.
Also it wouldn't need to flash the CURE firmware first and the ORIGINAL after that.
Though this wouldn't add any new possibilities, but it would make the curing process more pleasant and quick.

Well, i little disappointed, i flashed the fw, it says update succesful, but i canŽt see the drive at all, not even for a moment. it just restarts normallyl.

    Thanks anyway for your effort...

i think i can handle updates using the SD card, and flashing cure and original firmwares.

Well, this is strange... it works flawlessly on my nuvi 1490.
When flashing 097201000999.rgn, try not disconnecting USB cable at all.

It even works when I insert an SD card with the following contents: (ldr.bin is the boot.bin from 097201000999.rgn)
[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]
After booting almost completely the device reboots and waits for a few tens of seconds for USB to be connected.
If I connect USB it enters the flash drive mode, otherwise it boots normally again.

tried this, it starts bootoing and the it restarts when loading maps, and continue restarting in a continuos loop.

i think iŽll give up with this one, i donŽt need to connect it to my PC very often, and i can manage updates flashing the FWs and i can upload maps usind th SD card.

Thanks again guys for all yout help and for sharing your knowledge.

    Unbelievable...
If calling the firmware in flash drive mode once doesn't work (after a timeout it reboots into normal mode), then how is it possible that permanently calling it in flash drive works? It should just reboot in loop then.
It looks like there is a difference between the first firmware calls and the subsequent successful one. Maybe the USB is 'warming up' slowly or something else.
Your device is very very strange!
Anyway, I can prepare an SD card with cure firmware as ldr.bin for you. But the firmware is too big, so it needs to be compressed, so I'll have to develop a firmware decompressor and it's not so easy and quick.

thanks for your help, but i donŽt think its worth it, at least i was able to restore it to a working state, and i can manage updates and uploads using SD card.

Again thanks for interest in my case.
    regards

I was dreaming about compressed firmwares for a long time, because then I would be able to test firmwares without actually flashing then. It's very convenient and sometimes it's indispensable (for example, for testing patched GVN firmwares). And I would be glad if it helps someone else. So, continue visiting this topic from time to time.
