    Well I do have a hot air rework unit mainly to reflow loose USB ports. It's not a Hakko, but it works fine. It is possible to use paste and hot air to do some reflowing but at this point, I am approaching diminishing returns to fix something I paid $14 for. I will strip off the screen, ports, zif connector and on-off switch and put them to good use.

    I agree, not worth the labour value in replacing the chip anyway. If you've established that it can't be reformatted best to tear it down. Pity you're in the States and not Oz. I could send you some work.

    PS: I shouldn't use slang terms on an international forum, but for explanation to others, [not Redrock3 who would know], regarding my previous post: 'Yours truly' is American, British, Australian etc idiom for 'me' or 'myself'.

    But I have learned that when nothing else will work, not even Cured firmware, using the Quick Cure batch file in preboot did get the unit to give a handshake to the PC and appear in Windows.

    Have you tried to format it with RMPrepUSB after loading Kunix's cure and reflash it to original sw ?

    Garmin has recently posted some recovery files for freezing issues in 30, 40 and 50 LM. I thought I would pass along the link.

    Don't you have a 13xx? If you flash another HWID firmware , you can then trash it.

    He seems to have many units Caty. I think he's switched subjects.

    @Redrock3
    The Garmin 40/50 'recovery files' consist of 'Recovery Application' being updater.exe and 'nuvi 40 and nuvi 50 Recovery File' and it's standard version 3.50 fw rgn named as '135000010350.rgn' rather than the conventional naming '135001000350.rgn'. The boot bins and fw_all.bin components are identical to the normal fw v3.50. No doubt the nuvi 30 Recovery File is also just standard V3.50 for HWID 1349. We have [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] where a user reported his 50 sticking after update to V2.50. Garmin pulled 2.50 and reissued 2.40 for a while. I think there was another user posted in here too for same issue with a 40 and i personally bought a 'bricked' one cheaply which had v2.50. Easy fix, no cure needed just flash later fw in preboot. There was also some discussion on this in middle of last year in the fw summary thread: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ].

    I did bounce around there, sorry.

    Catymag, the problem is that I am unable to make any permanent changes to the 1350. I can delete files, attempt a format, run a chkdsk to correct file errors, and when the unit reboots, none of the changes are saved and it reverts to the original configuration. It is acting very much as a read only image.

    Default A problem with Nuvi 3710.

    Hi to everyone!
    I am a newbuy of a Garmin Nuvi 3710. It worked ok till now, but I tried to install a new map and pluged it with data cable to my computer. First on the LCD shows GARMIN, after that picture that it is conected to the computer and after that it disapeared.
    Now the Nuvi starts when I press the power button, shows GARMIN for 5 seconds and power off for another 5 seconds and this is continueslly. When I plug the usb cable it is the same, but this is repeated all the time. The Nuvi didn't boot to show loading maps.
    The computer doesn''t find the Nuvi. I tried hard reset, but it doesn't work.
    When I press and hold the left upper corner of the Nuvi, when GARMIN shows on the screen, it flashes SYSTEM 4 times, after that LOADING...... and thats all.
    I will be very faitfull if you can help me. Please HELP ME!

    THANK YOU!
