I don't know what sequence did use use for preboot but for Nuvi 765T use the following method:
Power off and USB cable in PC but not Nuvi. Hold finger on the upper right corner of the screen. Slide to Power on, Slide to lock, and quickly Insert USB cable.

765T model goes into preboot like this:

    -Turn the device off
-Hold the screen above the letters RM
    -Lock the device
-Connect it to the PC through USB

    Thats all to it

    1. Turn off the navigator.[/COLOR]

    2. Press the upper left corner of the screen.

    3. Turn on the navigator and press in the middle of the screen (over the letter "G" of the logo Garmin). Keep on holding your finger on the screen.

    Friends,
After a great fright when the Upgrade.exe crashed in the middle of the installation of original firmware of my 3790 (with 3490 fw) and my gps has blotted out totally, noticed that there is a substantial difference in the procedures for entering in pre-boot mode of the 3790 and 3490 firmware/gps. I could only get in preboot after dozens of attempts 99% wrong.. So I'm posting here the way that I judge the more accurate and fast to enter in pre boot on these gps/firmwares.

The fact is that the procedure, or rather the position of the finger on the screen, is different for the 3790 and 3490 (device/firmware)
The procedure works 100% with no errors and at the first attempt:

    - For 3790 with original firmware: place your finger ABOVE letter G (25 X 40mm position, as pictured above) only at the time that the Garmin logo appears.
Appearing "system, system .." in the screen the procedure is correct, and follow the process.

    - For 3490 (or 3790 with this firmware): position the finger OVER the letter G (35 X 40mm position) only at the time that the Garmin logo appears.. If you see "system, system" .. the procedure is correct (it is not necessary to enable Mass Storage). Just take the process sequence..

i've had a frustrating time trying to get a nuvi 550 into preboot mode. Follow instructions for this model but all i end up with is the calibration mode. Anyone with a Nuvi 5xx come up with a reliable way to get these into preboot mode?

Nuvi waits for about 30 seconds in pre-boot mode, if you don't start flashing in this time, it goes to calibration procedure.

You must first install garmin usb drivers and you must have open updater.exe to see when your nuvi will be recognized.
Try with holding uper left corner ( updater will see your nuvi only 10 second ).

I have a Nuvi 1350 that I can't get to recognize in USB mode.

Where do I get updater.exe and a good firmware file to load to it. Preferably, I'd like to restore it to factory state.

    Thanks!
