I am back, and all is well!

This morning I was able to flash back to the 3790 system successfully. I downloaded the update, and then added the files necessary for Voice Recognition. I am please to say that my 3790 is finally back to where it was when new, plus I have updated all the maps as well to the newest version.

Now that all is back to normal, I would like to explore, with you experts, the process of doing the change of software from 3790 to 3490 successfully and easy. What eventually got me in trouble was trying to use the SD card to make the changes, after using the updater and flashing the files.

By what I am reading, many of you have gone from 3790 to 3490 using the SD Card system, and it all works perfectly when done. So the question is why did I get in so much trouble trying to follow that route. My guess is that something went wrong with the initial flash to 3490, or the subsequent flash of the Garmin Splash Screen.

My Micro SD card is a 32GB size and doing some research I find that Garmin recommends no larger than 16GB size for use in the 3790. Could that have possibly upset everything, causing my problems when trying to use the SD to load a different version?

I really do want to do the upgrade to 3490, love all of those new features, but not at the risk of going through what I have had to do this past 24 or so hours. I am so relieved to just have all back to the 3790 system, and all working!

So I am looking for suggestions and recommendations, as well as what file to download that will do a complete update to 3490 without all the thumb pressing, restarting, and frustration of using that system.

Again my sincere thanks for all the help and suggestion along the way, I could not have done it without your input.

    George in Albion MI, U.S.A.

OK George, so now you're assured that there is nothing wrong with your unit hardware. As to flashing to 3490 'without all the thumb pressing', i suppose you mean without having to flash the logo for 3490 using updater.exe? If so, yes but this time we need to follow everything to the letter so go back to Post #1 and do each step [including the NV Backup before you start the conversion]. Then flash the complete 34 fw, following the instructions down to this:
At this point your Nuvi will restart without logo but as a 34xx.
Go to volume page ,get Debugging menu and reset Nuvi again (clear non vol), restart it and go to Debugging menu again.

Go to MTP Settings and set it to Mass storage mode.
NOW... AND THIS IS IMPORTANT TOO: Backup NV again this time as 34 for another safeguard. Then do the folder restoration stuff detailed in 'OUTDATED METHOD' after 'Restart your Nuvi .' Then you skip down to the last part of Post #1 to:

CURRENT METHOD:Another way to convert 34xx with logo and enable features :

    Flash full 34xx firmware
Unpack the file to an empty SD card, turn nuvi off, insert card, turn nuvi on.
    remove sd
You've already flashed the full 34xx firmware, so now you can just do the SD card thing again [see note below] with no fumbling around trying to find that 'elusive G-spot' [umm, heard that before somewhere ...]. This is where i think it all went wrong for you before so before you start let's check something: In the pack you dl'ed named 'convert37x34.zip' which you should have unzipped to a microSD, open the folder named '34'. In there is 140.bin file. I want you to check something in that, so dl this zip file [Only registered and activated users can see links. ], and open Mod3xxx.exe. Browse to the file 140.bin and check what it looks like. I'm particularly wanting to confirm that 'ASR' is checked like this:
    iitr

If everything is the same as above exit the application. If one of those isn't checked, then check it and hit 'Save'. If you want the Android Phonelink, check the last one too. Now I want you to check something else: Garmin>Updater>1376>Ldr.bin. Open Ldr.bin with RGN_Tool and check the SW Version. If it's not the same as the fw version your used to flash [i.e. 7.90], replace it by loading the 7.9 fw into RGN_Tool and saving its boot.bin as Ldr.bin to replace the version in the 1375 folder [you've probably got 7.20 there at present]. This may not be all that important but do it anyway to be consistent. NOTE: Don't use that big card again. It shouldn't be a problem but I've never used anything that big for this kind of thing, i've only used 1, 2, 4 and 8Gib cards. 32GiB [and even 64Gib SDXC cards re-formatted in FAT32] are fine in modern nuvis as map cards though.

Now you're ready to flash the 34 logo and enable features so make sure the unit is fully off not just in standby, then put your card in and turn on. Let it finish, it will reboot. Then check if you have the ASR Icon in Apps. You may need to restore the ASR/SRX files for your map and the en_US.srd for Jack & Jill and for another voices you use [if this works, you best use en_AU.srd with the lovely Aussie Karen for a while ].

Let us know how you go .... Good luck this time.

I am really scared off by the details and information in post #1. There are so many warnings, files to download, files to unzip, make changes, drop files, and of course the ever present Pre-Boot procedure that is so "maybe it will work if you try it enough time" I am afraid to even start trying to follow all of that, and then also, at the same time, follow your instructions, skipping around in the Post #1, and doing even more stuff as you direct as well.

So far my success has been due to the clear numbered step by step procedure that is on Page 19 of this posting. It was done there by Membre. Unfortunately, at my age and mentality, I need that kind of NUMBERED step by step procedure to follow. Even more important is that your posting last evening was very concise and I understood how to do it and it got me back to where I am now.

I have the Post #1 printed out, it is seven pages of bits and pieces, with all kinds of stuff interspersed between different parts of the procedure.

Post # 19 is a page and a half, with 25 concise steps to follow. Unfortunately, that is the kind of "hand holding" that I seem to need to move methodically through the process.

This is probably asking a lot, but would it be possible for you to review Post #19, and using your modified procedure inserted where appropriate, end up with a numbered final procedure that leads the user through the procedure step by step. Your notes about backups, etc... inserted at the appropriate place should be included. The links to programs and files needed along the way would keep the user on track, one step at a time.

Your post yesterday at 11:21, detailing how to touch, hold, prepare the program, and get to the pre-boot was exactly what I needed to get my nuvi back to working. It is that kind of detail that us who DON'T know what we are doing need to have to do the step by step procedure that is so necessary. If not for that procedure you outlined, I probably would not have gotten it back to working perfectly as a 3790.

Doing a lot of thinking about going any farther. It has been hell so far, but the nuvi has survived the journey.

Keep in mind that the info at the end of Post #184 on page 19 regarding xml editing for enabling feature is now useless and quite out of date. Also the fw version 4.40 is ancient and that Post #1 has been updated by catymag many times.

But sure, it you find it easier to follow, just substitute the current v7.90 fw but only follow it up to and including point 16 with the following amendments:

Point 1 needs to include 'do a NV backup' as well of course and also do it again as 34 after Point 16.
After Point 16 use the tut for flashing the logo and enabling features in the last part of my post #944 above, i.e. after this: 'You've already flashed the full 34xx firmware, so now you can just do the SD card thing again.'

You can also substitute that other method he uses for entering pre-boot mode on the 37 with the one from my post #927 which worked for you before, or hold just above the G as shown in the image in Post #1. Also check the extra info in my Post #930 again.

You've already got the tut from page 19 copied, so make those amendments yourself if you like before you start. We normally don't give such close individual tuts as this, so you should feel very honoured ...

Hi Neil, and a great big thanks for all the "Hand Holding," I do appreciate very much all the help that has been given here. Once I get all the bits and pieces together so it makes sense to me, I will proceed again with the upgrade to 3490. I simply need now to sit down with all the pieces, starting with Post #1 and get it all sorted out in my mind.

Again a big thanks for all the effort on your end,
    George

Neil, I want to make sure that I understand what to do with the below info:

CURRENT METHOD:Another way to convert 34xx with logo and enable features :

Flash full 34xx firmware (This means to use the files on the preceding page and flash them using the Pre-Boot procedure by dropping the file in the Updater?

Next, unpack what files to empty SD card
Unpack the file to an empty SD card, turn nuvi off, insert card, turn nuvi on.
    remove sd

Does something happen between between "turn nuvi on and remove sd? Sometimes I just don't understand what is being said I guess.

Yes, exactly. Follow the steps in either Post #1 for flashing the 34 fw, or in Post #184 up to 16 inclusive [with my noted amendments to do NV backups as both 37 & 34].

Next, unpack what files to empty SD card
Unpack the file to an empty SD card, turn nuvi off, insert card, turn nuvi on.
    remove sd
The one named 'convert37x34.zip'. There are 3 links there in post #1, all are working.

Does something happen between between "turn nuvi on and remove sd? ....
Yep. The command in the file named 'update.txt' will be executed, this one:
    xrgn,16,1:/34/16.bin
    xrgn,140,1:/34/140.bin
    reboot
What that's doing is telling the nuvi to flash the 34x0 logo contained in 16.bin to region 16 and the modified 140.bin to region 140 to enable the additional features. Just make sure you let it finish, it will only take a little while but that last command 'reboot' means you'll know for sure it's done when the unit starts up again by itself. Then you can remove the microSD.

If you don't actually understand all that at present, don't worry, it's perfectly safe [trust me i'm an Australian, we live with maneating sharks and crocodiles, the most venomous snakes in the world, numerous serial killers and shudder.....Kylie Minogue ... we know how to stay safe .

But do as i said earlier and firstly ensure that all features [especially ASR] are checked in 140.bin [except ecoRoute HD & ecoRoute Purchase] using the Mod3xxx.exe app, and also change the v7.20 Ldr.bin to v7.90. If you are still lost, send me a Private Message and i'll help you further without cluttering the thread. But please have a go first yourself, i'm sure you can do it [i'm 66 and badly brain-damaged from alcohol abuse so if i can do it, then you can too].

Thanks Neil, that really helps a lot. I guess I am a detail person, and when someone who knows what is happening writes a how to do it for someone else to read that does not know what they are doing, the intricate detail that the writer possess mentally, somehow does not manage to get put in words on the document being presented.

A big help at this point.

Gosh, if I am successful in getting this all figured out and can do it at will, I may even put together a step by step procedure for us "dummies" to follow. Sometimes a different point of view can be helpful.

    Thanks,
    George
