Geoge, no panic!
Notice if after connecting the GPS appears a tenuous illuminated in screen. If yes, disconnect the GPS again pressing and holding the button on/off for several seconds to make sure that is not on stand by.
Turn on again and so that you see the tenue bottom lit, press and hold the upper left corner of the screen gps. Thus you go into pre-boot mode. Calm down, :)
Hi AngeloZip
Hard to be calm when you are in this kind of a situation!
Was a mix up on ebay and I purchased the 3790 by mistake, wanted the 3490! Rather than sending it back, I decided to simply load in the 3490 software. I had been here reading about the 3490 and 3790 prior to my purchase.
I thought this was going to be easy to do, never expected all the difficulty that I am having, getting to 3490 level!
Well, I tried what you said, and it indeed work and the message at the top said loading software, with the Garmin Logo and blue triangle in the middle of the screen. After about 20 minutes, I plugged it into the computer USB port. It immediately sent up an error message, something about not the right version of something and it shut down.
Now, a completely new situation, no matter what I try all I get is the Garmin Logo in the middle of the screen. Have tried to get back to pre-boot condition, but after about 20 tries it does not seem to want to work. And between each try, I held the off button for about 15 seconds, just to make sure it was going off.
What do I need to try next?
George
Add finger on letter G for pre boot.
George, my suggestion was to enter in pre-boot to load a firmware (3790 or 3490 fw) by the update.exe. For some strange reason appeared after the Garmin logo. If this "logo" is of the 3490, to enter in pre-boot do as suggested by Lolypop, ie, just press and hold your finger on the "G" of "logo" Garmin. If the "logo" that appears is of the 3790 the position is different, ie, press and hold your finger just above the "G" of the "logo" garmin, or do as I suggested in the previous post (top left corner of the screen). Before you get ready to install the desired firmware with update.exe, as indicated at the start of the thread, so get in pre-boot.Quote:

p.s: Everything indicates that you have the firmware of 3790 with the logo of the 3490, so this locked. So to enter in pre-boot and reinstall the firmware that you want, start trying to press the letter G, but only when the logo appears on the screen, and not before. Alternatively, I believe that now may be the time to reinstall the 3790 logo (also by pre-boot) as suggested in the previous post by Loly and explained in the first post.
@ReorgeRace
If you are still unsure if it's flashed as 37 or 34 and having trouble reaching pre-boot, do this: Use your thumb to hold both on and over the letter G at same time. 37xx enters pre-boot holding a bit over the G and 34xx is more on the G as advised by Loly and Angelo.
Thanks to all for all the suggestions. Nothing works! When I turn it on with the switch, put it in the car, or simply plug the cord into my USB port, I get exactly the same reaction.
When I had the very dim screen with no logo, I got to the pre-boot by pressing in the upper left corner. I then flashed the 37XX logo back and that is when everything quit working. So I am guessing what I am seeing is the 37XX logo on the screen. It does not matter where I press on the screen, it just sits there and does nothing.
I feel this is the end of the road for the nuvi. Is a hard way to learn a lesson and I do appreciate all the suggestions and advice. If nothing else I have learned that no matter how careful you are, you can still make errors in following others instructions. Maybe it is just me, but there are differences in how the process of flashing is described between presenters. The "nuvi" talk is sometimes difficult to understand and translate into action correctly.
At this point in time, I really don't think there is anything else that can be done to restore my nuvi to any kind of operation. I has become a very expensive paper weight, but I guess you can't win them all. Again my thanks to all for trying,
Eventually it will end up on eBay for a very reasonable price, lifetime updates, accessories, and all. No reasonable offer will be refused! If any of you are interested, make me an offer that I can't refuse.

George, I love to have your gps for a trifle, but gotta be honest and recommend: have patience! Yes u can have bricked your device, most likely solution exists, but it will only happen if u can get in pre-boot and here the minimum detail will make the difference. A secret is the exact moment when you have to press the screen, in this case, when appears immediately the Garmin Logo, neither before nor after. You have done it? Of course have the positions possible, try them all, but always obeying the exact time, as mentioned. I've been through this scare, I almost had a heart attack lol, but after a few attempts (+-400) I managed to get in pre-boot. Try as much as possible, do not give up!
I second Angelo's encouragement to keep trying. I too have been in this predicament more than once and ready to throw a nuvi at the wall. As Angelo said, the timing is imperative, you must press immediately the logo appears.
Here are some other tips:
Make sure you have updater.exe open on your desktop with the .rgn file ready to flash, and the dot entered beside 'USB device'. When loader appears, press OK immediately.
Plug the usb into a REAR port of your PC, have your thumb hovering over the screen ready to pounce, plug the microUSB into the nuvi and the instant the logo appears immediately press down hard with your thumb covering the G and a little above it as well using the whole of the pad of your thumb, not just the tip. If 'Loader' does not immediately appear in the top part of the screen, you've missed it. Hold the power switch down for at least 10 seconds before you try again.
Just keep trying. We've all been thru this. If your nuvi powers on as far as the logo it can go into pre-boot. If it can go to pre-boot it can be recovered. I once wasted half a day to get into preboot to cure a badly bricked 3790. That was one of most frustrating days of my life but after dozens, probably over a hundred attempts, 'Loader' appeared and it flashed the cure fw. Stay calm and be organised. There is nothing worse than finally getting into preboot to find you're not ready with updater.exe and the rgn file.
Good morning!
Neil, I followed your instructions exactly and guess what? It worked the very first time! THANKS, THANKS, THANKS!
Now, with all the brain power aboard here, hopefully there are some modifications that can be made to really get this thing fully working as a 3490.
Here is where I am at the moment:
1. Have no startup splash "Garmin" screen.
2. No Audio! On the About page it says "Audio Version: Missing
3. Nothing on the About page about "Voice Command"
I do have a backup from before my original flash of the 3790 software, but it does not include any system file. Don't know if that is normal or not. Did not save the NV file either.
Now the big question. Is there a way to get back to the original 3790 operation, everthing like it came?
If not, I really want the 3490 features to work, including the Route Voice and Voice Commands.
How do I get there?
I sure do appreciate all the suggestions and comments from the group.
I don't want to do anything until I hear a plan of attack from you folks.
Again a big thanks for getting be back to where I am. It is at least a starting point.
