I think lolypop000 is being too polite ;) ..... what he really means is if you do not understand the tut (clear & concise imo) and/or the individual problems and how they are addressed in the thread then you really should not attempt this at all. The guys posting here are not only knowegable but also very helpful and if you run into trouble they will help you out provided you have sufficient base knowledge to comprehend their advice.Quote:

If you're not sure, don't try it until you're satisfied with what's going on :).
Lolypop000 and Neil,
Thanks for the insightful/constructive feedback. I am good with instruction and appreciate all the contributers to this fine post and website. It appears that a miniscule number of users that attempted this conversion, ran into issues/problems along the lines and decided to revert. The flashing process is quite fragile but it's fully attainable.
I understand the process and want to implement it. My emphasis is solely concerning the aftermath of this process and the issues various people (that attempted this) have encountered. The tutorial in the first post is really helpful. I am just concerned with the conclusion of the task...
3790t ---> 3490t Firmware : eager to attain.
Planning to convert your nuvi 37xx to 34xx?
Carefully read post #1 and all other posts to have a clear understanding of what's going on.
Thanks a lot for the Tutorial by catymag and all other helpful posts.
Still cannot understand Tutorial in post #1, below is the step by step I did, based of course on post #1
for mine to work.
Conversion of my 3760T to 3490T (Using Win 7 x64)
1. As usual very important first back-up your nuvi.
2. Connect your nuvi in your PC. In .\system\ folder delete the file GUPDATE.gcd
3. Rename folders Voice, Text & Keyboards to whatever name you want, say zVoice, zText ect.
4. Disconnect nuvi safely fr. PC, turn nuvi on, go to volume window, in landscape position
press and hold at the right uppermost part of the screen, it will show the Diagnostics Page,
go to Developer Info --> Nonvol Statistics --> Press the 3 bars menu --> Then Clear Nonvol.
5. Download 34xx firmware from garmin ([Only registered and activated users can see links. Click Here To Register...])
6. Download RGN tool from Turboccc site ([Only registered and activated users can see links. Click Here To Register...])
7. Open RGN Tool, Drag & drop file (nuvi34xx_GCDFile__440.gcd) to the file drag zone. save it in the
desktop (now the filename is nuvi34xx_GCDFile__440.rgn)
8. Download Garmin Updater v.2.8.0 from the link in post #1 save it in the desktop.
9. Drag the file nuvi34xx_GCDFile__440.rgn to the updater icon it will pop up, now select
connection settings as USB Device.
10. Connect nuvi to the PC it will recognized it as a storage device, safely eject it from
the USB safely remove icon but do not disconnect it physically from the PC.
11. Get it to preboot mode: turn on Nuvi, at starting press & hold the left uppermost part
of the nuvi screen.
12. The Updater will recognized it as USB Device when you'll see your nuvi listed in the updater, press OK.
13. Now the Update will begin. Caution: don't release finger on the screen until the updating
session is finish and the Updater tells you that the update was successfull.
14. Disconnect from PC. restart nuvi, at this point wait a little bit longer as the Garmin logo is missing.
15. When nuvi is turned on you will see nice 3490 screen. Reset nuvi, Go to volume window, in landscape position
press and hold at the right uppermost part of the screen, it will show the Diagnostics Page,
go to Developer Info --> Nonvol Statistics --> Press the 3 bars menu --> Then Clear Nonvol.
16. Restart nuvi select country and language. Go to volume window again, in landscape position
press and hold at the right uppermost part of the screen, it will show the Diagnostics Page,
scroll down go to MTP Settings --> Select mass Storage then save.
17. To be able to see Garmin Logo at start-up,
download link "Logo splash screen for nuvi 34xx hid 1376" from post #1 (file 34xx_350_logo_hid1376.rgn).
save it in desktop.
18. Connect nuvi to the PC it will recognized it as a storage device, safely eject it from
the USB safely remove icon but do not disconnect it physically from the PC.
19. Drag the file 34xx_350_logo_hid1376.rgn to the updater icon it will pop up, now select
connection settings as USB Device.
20. Get nuvi to preboot mode: turn on Nuvi, at starting press & hold the left uppermost part
of the nuvi screen.
21. Don't release your finger for a while. Mine was stuck in this step, the nuvi screen freezes
says software loading. What I did was, I disconnect from PC and Turned on the nuvi after a while the nuvi started
normally with the GARMIN logo.
22.Get all the features availables for your nuvi, you must copy *.xml files in attachment in post #1 in /Garmin
(example /Garmin/DeviceConfig_MP3_Enabled.xml)
23. Restore name of Text, Voice & Keyboards folder.
24. Run Webupdater to update newly converted 3490. Updates are Dashboards and new text files etc.
25. ReStart Nuvi.
The only issue I had was for the voice command.
It says Voice command support is not available for american english.
Anything else is working great!
Any solution regarding this?
The ASR files for 3790 are different than those used in the original 3490.Quote:

Since you did a backup as 3790, delete everything in .System\ASR\ folder.
Connect with Webupdater and "Proceed to check for additional updates such as voice updates"
Check which language "Speech Recognition Data, xxxxxx ASR" you want to install.
If you choose english only, now in the .System\ASR\ folder you have two files named "en_US.srd" and "en_GB.srd".
Now copy in .System\ASR\ folder, the rest of the "special for the 3490" files depending if you have Europe or North America CN.
For 3760-->3490, you don't delete anything because you didin't have any ASR folder in the device.

For the ORIGINAL 3490LMT OWNERS:
Copy ALL (all together) *xml files in the attachment in post #1 in Garmin folder, restart Nuvi and you have MP3 and Video Player ENABLED!!!!
Copy them ALL at the same time and NOT only "DeviceConfig_MP3_Enabled.xml" and "DeviceConfig_VideoPlayback_Enabled.xml", because if you just copy only those two, Bluetooth is disabled.
Works for Europe sold 3490LMT.
Thanks let me update and see if it works ...Quote:

Awesome now it works perfectly!
Major help needed.
I finally got the courage to flash the garmin 3790t and convert it to 3490t. Followed tutorials to the letter. Firmware flashing achived BUT the flashing the 3490t splash screen was inconclusive. I decided to keep the 3490t firmware installed but wanted to restore the 3790t splash screen.
When i attempted that major fail was the result. The firmware installation halted and froze. All i have is a black screen on the 3790t. Super dissapointed.
Why you didn't read what Neil wrote to you :"you really should not attempt this at all"Quote:

Logo gone when 37xx go to 34xx because of different size of logo.Quote:

If you run on 34xx firmware then you need 34xx Logo to be flashed not 37xx logo.bin
The black screen is not the sign of dead 37xx. If you see the light appear on screen after you press power button so it means you can access preboot mode to go back to 37xx firmware.
Aekhong, you have those wings on your avatar for a reason. lol thanks for the words of encouragement. After numerous attempts< i was able to revert and flash back to 3790t firmware. :0) Thought I had a paperweight for a second. When I flashed the 3490t firmware I noticed bugs.
One bug- there is an obvious lag on junction picture pop up when the anouncement is made. The junction view picture will show up two or 3 seconds after the Jill's announcement. I've always had it in sync before. This is the large full screen JCV.
Second bug- The 3490t splash screen (1st post) has issues. When you apply it - it appears correct in the beginning but then it shifts to the top right. This was one of the reasons I wanted to revert to a 3790t splash screens. Then i got stuck for a while on the black screen of death.
Just thought I'd comment on my venture. It indeed ended well. I almost gave up. lol
