Thumbs up Honda Goldwing 2006-2008 Navi GPS Firmware Update Version 4.50 NON-NT to NT

Convert Garmin GPS from NON-NT files to NT files (may work with other Garmin GPS units?)

This file updates the Honda Goldwing 2006-2008 Navi GPS firmware to be able to use the new GARMIN NT. MAPS. The new version is 4.5 and only works on Honda Goldwing model years 2006-2008 motorcycles made in the USA and use a 2MB Compact Flash Card (CF card). A new 2MB CF card will work or a 4MB CF card will also work but is not needed. I used a 4MB card do to not finding a 2MB card at the store.

Step 1. Remove your old card from the GPS unit in the Goldwing trunk (see your manual for instructions) and keep it for a backup.

Step 2. Copy the file gupdate.gcd to your new CF card BY ITSELF in a folder called GARMIN. That's the only file that should be on the card...just a folder and a file. It doesn't matter what the card itself is named. Rename file 4.5gupdate.gcd to only gupdate.gcd

Step 3. BEFORE you put the card back in the GPS, power up the bike (accessory is fine) and don't press the ENTER button when prompted by the GPS. NOW go around to the trunk and stick the CF card in. Now then...be patient. When you put the card in, the GPS will set there for a little while with just the default Navigation logo screen. It looks like it's not doing anything, but be patient...don't turn the key off. It will eventually read the card and pull the update file into the GPS unit. A small black box at the bottom of the screen will eventually load and show you what's going on. When it's done, the GPS will reboot itself. You can check and make sure that the version number under System Info is now 4.5 Turn bike off.

Step 4. Now go take your new CF card back to your PC and add the latest NT. MAP FILES on to the CF card. Put the new CF card with the maps back in the GPS and you should be good to go with your new NT. maps. Version 4.5 also works with your old Garmin non-NT maps. Enjoy and ride safe. This version has problems. It doesn't work. It freezes, reboots in the middle of a find by name search. If you install any other map that didn't come with it, you can't do any searches at all by name. If you want to find Pizza Hut in your area or anything else, it will come up blank. Meaning 0 hits. If you are able to find things by name, they will be out of order and in another state thousands of miles away.

You are correct about doing large PIO searches that show many results for the same name. But the NT maps work! Which is much more important than finding Pizza Hut. Garmin is working on fixing this problem and I hope they get it corrected.

This is a firmware problem that Garmin has to correct. The address search works and the unit does do a reboot but you will not lose your route. A large PIO search will not work. PIO's do show up on the display when zoomed in. Updating the maps will not repair this problem. Just have to wait for another firmware update.

Hey guys, I am brand new to this forum and I'd like to be sure I understand what I am reading. If I catch on, Garmin is producing firmware updates to the Navi that would be on my '06 Wing to allow use of the NT map formats - since they no longer make the non-NT version. If this is true, I am glad and relieved. Is then the load up process of an NT map version much different than the non-NT version? I came across a forum from England where a guy detailed buying the non-NT maps on a DVD and subsequently loading that to a CF card for instal on the bike. Will that process pretty much be the same AFTER the firmware is updated? Sorry to be so first grade about this as you guys here likely have far more experience with this sort of thing than I obviously do.

You are correct. Firmware update 4.50 for the Goldwing will allow you to use the newer NT maps on the 06-08 goldwing. There are a few quirks with it though. Mostly dealing with the searches of POIs. You can install the firmware then use unlocked maps such as City Navigator North America 2012.40. You only have to install the firmware once. There is a newer firmware release 4.60 which is supposed to address the search proplem. I however have not seen the firmware update. It is available from Garmin on CF card and has City Navigator North America 2011.10 for approximately $100.00. I have read that only the 2011.10 installed by Garmin on the card works correctly though. Either way 4.50 or 4.60 will allow you to use the newer maps. I am fairly certain you can still set a destination and it will provide the correct guideance. I have not tried this as of this time.
