the problem is how do I know what isn't correct? From what I've learned the map update didn't finish properly. So that sent me into a bootup repeat cycle.
Exploring the nuvi I don't see anything that show ups as maps or the like in the directory tree.
There's likely a lot of hidden files but I didn't explore quite that far.
Just hoping if I restore the standard firmware I don't go back to the never ending reboot.
Then you must remove the maps that are damaged.
After download the new map /version NAVTEQ 2012.20/, copy to your device and flash with new firmware using webupdater
what is the map directory called? Sorry if I'm being a pain, but as I stated there wasn't anything I saw when viewing it as a mass storage drive that looked like the map directory that needs to be deleted.
Maps may by in folder:
.System (hidden folder) or Map or Garmin
Maps may be named:
gmapprom.img, gmapsupp.img (sup2, supp2 etc.)
Other names to ignore.

without your handholding I never would have been able to accomplish the repair of my nuvi.
I can't express my appreciation enough.
Now off to see if I can screw up my 2720 with updated maps
