And probably no further updates because it's a discontinued series.

Could you update the file nuvi13xxand14xxseries_450.gcd again? All the links are dead. Thank you very much.

    Default 1300 incompatible with 6.2?

My nuvi 1300 with part no. 006-B0972-00 seems incompatible with 6.2. I downloaded it and renamed it gupdate.gcd and stored it on my sd card under the Garmin directory. With the sd card in, boot up goes into a repeating flash-reboot loop and it won't power down. At the point of beginning reboot, I can remove the sd card without damage to the sd card or its files. It then reboots normally into version 5.8 and I can power down normally as well. Is there a secret trick I don't know about to get this to work? Do I have to upgrade to intermediate versions in sequence to install 6.2 or is it just incompatible completely?

Is it possible it has something to do with my enabling of JCV and speed limit features as per tutorial on this site?

Jimmy, Thx for advice. I did exactly as you suggested but unfortunately am getting the exact same behavior. There must be some other problem.

Better you remove device ID from your post!
Look at internal memory if you have an old gupdate.gcd and remove it then retry with renamed file from

No, it's definitely not the problem. Flashing the senior model logo to your 1300 only changes the Splash to D1340-50 from its original D1340-00. It does not involve the firmware at all, only enables the features provided by the fw which previously were blocked to the unit. All 13xx/14xx from 1300 to 1490 use exactly the same firmware. I've modified the splash to D1340-50 on numerous 1xxx which are all now running V6.20, including a US 1300 identical to yours.

Do as jimmy suggests and remove any old gupdate.gcd file from the unit's .System folder if present, and redownload the v6.2 gcd as the other file may be corrupt. You could also do the upgrade by connecting to WebUpdater or GarminExpress. Before you again attempt to upgrade, backup the unit, hard reset it or clear non-vol and also back up NV memory [rgn41]: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] before any fw update.

    Neil,

Thx for the background info on the logo upgrade. Also, thx for the advice. I have no .gcd files on the nuvi or on the sd card other than that for 6.2. I have downloaded 6.2 three times from three different urls and got 3 identical files. Each time, I got the same behavior upon flashing. I run linux and my virtualbox, which runs xp, cannot connect to the web or recognize garmin on usb, so I cannot use either WebUpdater or GarminExpress for my fw update.

So I will hard reset and backup as you recommend, but then retry the same sd card based update strategy.

I am worried, however, will a hard reset go back to factory settings and block the JCV and speed limit features? I don't really feel like taking another 2 days to refigure out how to restore those features as I did 2 or more years ago.

Update: I have met with success thanks to Neil. I successfully backed up my nuvi and updated its fw to 6.2 with his help, despite the many problems I ran into. For those who have a similar issue, I am sharing what I learned.

    To update firmware manually:
    1) download the firmware you want
    2) use any SD card with enough room, BUT, all folders that have names that the nuvi will recognize upon booting
(i.e., Garmin and Map), you must rename them or cloak them by moving them to a generally named folder (e.g., temp).
These folders, if visible to the nuvi, will interfere with the flash process and cause an infinite flash-reboot loop cycle
    3) create a folder "Garmin" at the top level of the file system, transfer the firmware into it and give it the name gupdate.gcd
    4) insert the SD card into the nuvi and power up
    5) after a flash cycle, the nuvi will begin a reboot, so when you see the normal splash screen, hold the power button
    till it powers down
    6) remove the SD card, delete, stealth-rename, or hide the Garmin folder and its update file, restore the names and/or locations
of the cloaked Garmin and Map folders
    7) insert into nuvi and use normally

    Done.

No, the only way to change the Splash is with a logo flash. Don't worry, no reset can ever affect it.

PS: Backup before the reset, not reset and backup, lol!
