Default (Nuvi 660) Is it possible to convert OEM FW to regular one?

    Hi there,

New here, please forgive my ignorance. I searched but could not find relevant info. If I missed it, a link would be appreciated.

Anyway I recently bought a "recertified" Garmin Nuvi 660 from RedTag/Ubid. It turns out to be a retired unit from Dollar Rent A Car. It works OK, but every time I start it, it displays a splash screen saying "property of DTG ...". Also the menu contains entries like "rental car return" (and in general it feels a bit spartan -- I have not seen a normal 660 so this is just my feelings).

The firmware that came with the unit is 4.70. I was able to download 4.90 from Garmin and install it successfully ("info" now says 4.90), but it did not change the splash screen or the menu items.

So my question is -- is it possible to convert this into a retail version and get rid of the splash screen and the rental car stuff? I like the device for its quick actions and clear map display, but it is a bit annoying to have to see the splash screen every time.

    Advice will be appreciated.

    Sean

Here two splash screens I have riped from the PouchX dumps of nuvi 660 and 670:

    Version 2.20 from nuvi 660:

    Version 2.20 from nuvi 670
[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

Don't know what is the difference between those two splash screens but they are different. Also I haven't tried them because I don't have 660 so USE THEM AT YOUR OWN RISK if you want!

    To flash a splash use:

BTW are you sure that your splash screen is firmware preloaded? Can you make a shot from the diagnostic menu of your unit where the battery is? Search for something like Test..Start Test...after that tap More

    Cheers,

Thanks for the very quick replies. But I am too much a newbie to even comprehend the instructions... :-(

I got the tools mentioned here, as well as updater.exe and FW 4.90 from Garmin (extracted gupdate.gcd).

    * Loading gupdate.gcd into rgn_tool, It shows HWID 596, SW version 490, for both bin files (boot.bin and fw_all.bin). I could save either file, but gir_editor refused to load either because they are not logo or gir files. Actually gir_editor also refused to load the logo files from ddabcd277's links (error 6: overflow).

    * I was able to add the logo.bin into the gcd file as the third bin file, and save it, but I am not sure what this will do. In particular, I could add another one (the 670 one), and when I load the modified gcd, I saw both of them listed despite they all have the same parameters. So I am wondering how the gcd works -- does it just load the sections in order, and overwrite earlier writes if later ones use the same address? In other words, if I just add it as the third bin file and load the modified firmware, would it be loaded over original and if it happens to be the region where the logo is accessed, then It gets replaced? From the addresses they don't actually seem to overlap ... but then since the firmware update does not change the splash, maybe the logo was at a different place. The addresses are:

    boot.bin: section 0800, size 270048, RGN region 0C
    fw_all.bin: Section BD02, size 10355456, RGB region 0E
    logo.bin (from nuvi660OrigSplashScreen): Section 1005, size 270274, RGN region 10

    * I actually don't know if my splash screen is firmware preloaded -- all I know is that it does not get replaced by firmware update, and it shows up first thing (before the copyright info etc shows up). In the garmin/ directory of the gps, there is a file named gmapoem.img (51K). I am not sur eif this has anything to do with the splash screen? I suppose the img files are some kind of archive (because there is also the gmapprom.img, which is over 1GB, and I suppose it is the actual map); How do I unpack them (7zip or winimage won't recognize them)?

    * was able to get into maintenance mode by holding upper left corner while power up, but could not get into diagnosis mode (I think I once accidentally entered it, but now I could not recall how ...). I'll keep trying.

I'll appreciate further advice. In particular, if I should just add the logo.bin to the gcd and load it (And in the case it does not work and/or messes up the gps, is it possible to reload the original? I would assume that the gps has "pre-boot" code built in that is not altered by update, and it would allow the load of new firmware. Is this true? )

    Thanks again!

    Sean

I don't know why turboccc GIR Editor don't want to open the logos I gave links. You should ask him. I have a feeling GIR Editor only support BMP RGB 565 and that is the reason. Better ask turbo. There could be also something wrong with this logos. I don't know.

You can flash the logo on section 1005 with only the boot from the firmware plus the logo after that you can save them to .rgn and flash. As I wrote use RGN Tool and if you have further questions better ask in the topic. Hope turboccc can answer.

.img is the extention of garmin maps. Don't think it has some connection with the splash. Garmin maps can be opened with Mapsource. Can you upload your gmapoem.img?

I asked because there is a function to change the second splash screen from the menu of the nuvi. (not the factory firmware preloaded splash screen) It should be something like Tools -> Picture Viewer - > Image and the image can be set to be shown when unit powers on. Did you try this? Also do you have a folder Splash in the memory of your unit?

Hold the battery icon for 30sec and you should enter in the dignostic menu. After that search for Test..Start Test...after that tap More and make a shot. Better keep trying...search for simmilar screen:

    Thanks again.

    * somehow I could not get into the diagnosis mode (I am sure I did see that inventory screen before though ...) I held the battery icon for as long as 3 minutes to no avail...

And when I tried to upload gmapoem.img, it won;t let me, claiming invalid file :-(

Let me repeat what I understand is the procedure to flash the image. Please correct me if I am wrong --

    1. load the original firmware gupdate.gcd into rgn_tool
    2. unselect fw_all.bin, keep boot.bin selected
    3. load logo.bin, select
    4. save to boot_logo.rgn
    5. use updater.exe to install boot_logo.rgn

this should replace logo (if it is at the right place) but not alter the actual firmware. Correct?

    thanks!

Everything is correct. If you want name the file 059601000490logo.rgn This is better.

If you wish upload gmappoem.img via Multiupload or 2Share.

Thanks this is all great information, I'm working the same issue with a unit I recently acquired.

Just a minor detail, I found, on the unit I have, I could enter the "diagnostic menu" by pressing and holding the "Time" icon, just to the right of the battery icon, for 30 seconds. I got there accidentally when I missed the battery icon. I know these units are all probably a little different, so it's hard to predict every scenario.

    Thanks again,
