Update, for those of you still running the "ancient" Garmin SP version 2.2 on your recent-vintage iPhones running iOS 9.0.2:

I'm currently running JB iOS 9.0.2 on my iPhone 6 Plus--Garmin SP 2.2 still works decently enough, with the following observations:

    1) It would seem that you may no longer need to modify the /etc/hosts file as outlined in post #1--I installed 2.2 on a different iPhone and followed my own instructions, other than the part about editing the /etc/hosts file--everything still works, including Traffic (see below) and Public Transit routing.

    2) My iPhone doesn't crash to the home screen nearly as often when I tap on nearby traffic hot spots, whereas when I was on iOS 8.x Garmin would crash to the home screen every time I tapped on a traffic hot spot.

    3) I'm also finding that I no longer need to put my phone in Airplane Mode before starting up Garmin.

    4) Now this is the part I have yet to understand why it's happening--for whatever reason when I try to add a (freeway) traffic camera via MyCameras it doesn't list traffic cameras that I know are nearby and used to load before I updated the iOS to 9.x...but it has no issue listing cameras that are 80+ miles away from my (current) location--e.g., no matter where I am in the Sacramento, CA metro area, it'll list only those cameras 80+ miles away (meaning, in and around the San Francisco, CA metro area). I thought maybe something went bonkers when I updated my iPhone 6 Plus to iOS 9.x so I did a completely clean install on an iPhone 4 I had lying around (I first did a DFU restore to iOS 7.1.2 since that is the highest version supported on iPhone 4, just to make sure the phone is wiped completely clean), then JB it, then installed Garmin SP 2.2 and did my tweaks--even on this phone with everything installed from scratch it shows only traffic cameras 80+ miles away...hopefully it's just something weird on Garmin's end. Actually I'll be heading to SF tomorrow so I suppose I can test to see what traffic cameras are listed when I try to view/add any while I'm physically over there.

I don't have a copy of 2.10 yet; however I tried to get things to work on 2.9 and this is what I was able to get from that effort (using NA maps):

The map version that you are *forced* to download (basemap, timezone, and NA map) at this time is 2015.20 (for comparison current rev is 2016.20); maps are installed to the following locations:

    <ID>/Documents/basemap/gmapbmap.img
    <ID>/Documents/gmaptz.img
<ID>/Documents/na_complete.img (I chose to d/l the entire NA map)

The forced download also includes the 2015.20 version of the InstaSearch D3157140A.SID.

Extras you can d/l for free include photoReal Junction View, 3-D Buildings and Landmarks, and Wikipedia--these are installed in the following locations:

<ID>/Documents/D3191140A.JCV (this is the 2015.20 version of SplitScreen Full JCV view)
<ID>/Library/sdcard/Garmin/gmap3d.img (like the other maps, this is also 2015.20 version)
    <ID>/Documents/Wikipedia_GPI.gpi (Wikipedia)

Although not free, you can get Panorama View 3D to work by simply copying the appropriate DEM file (in my case I copied the NA one, gmapdem.img) to this location:

    <ID>/Library/sdcard/Garmin

One other bit of good news--looks like the Safety Camera feature (i.e., speed and red-light camera locations) is still there, as you can view the Safety Camera Locations via plist hack of the settings_general.plist file.

Now for the bad news--unfortunately I cannot get Traffic, Urban Guidance (routing using public transportation), and photoLive Traffic Cameras to work, even after messing around with various plist files. In addition, it would appear that trafficTrends is no longer a purchaseable option--it's not even listed in the Extras section; I'm guessing this may be due to the fact that there is now a feature called myTrends (for which I had to hack the settings_general.plist file in order to view the various myTrends-related settings you can play with that don't show up by default).

Even more bad news--like others before me, I cannot get 2.9 to recognize the latest Garmin map files; if I try to open 2.9 using maps that were not d/l and installed directly via the app, the app will act as if you don't have any maps installed and ask (i.e., force) you to d/l the maps from the Garmin server--you can't simply ignore the prompt, as the app will just not progress any further. I think what may be preventing the app from recognizing custom maps is the presence of what I believe to be unlock files found here:

    <ID>/Library/sdcard/MapUnlock

    I see these files:

    3471_1_0_0.gma
    3471_2_0_0.gma
    3471_1_0_0.unl
    3471_2_0_0.unl

I'm guessing that they are for the NA and 3D maps I d/l via the app; I tried deleting these files and then manually copied the 2016.20 files (NA map, 3D map, JCV map, SID) to the same locations--the app still asks you to d/l maps before it'll allow you to use the app.

Even if there was a way to be able to use custom/latest maps on Garmin 2.9 and above, I'm still a bit bummed about not getting Traffic, Urban Guidance, and liveTraffic Cameras to work on 2.9--all of these work on 2.2, albeit with a few bugs that you can work around. Hopefully someone smarter than me can figure it out...

Okay so I learned from reading in this forum that GMA is Garmin's authentication protection scheme; as for the UNL files I suppose I could use JetMouse on locked NA and 3D IMG files to generate the UNL files but not sure how to generate the GMA files. If I had to guess, I think the newer/recent versions of the Garmin app for iOS are coded so that it will only recognize maps that have GMA protection scheme--this may explain why I get prompted to d/l maps even though I have replaced the original (locked) maps with unlocked maps loaded in the same locations as the locked ones originally downloaded via the app...the app is unable to find the corresponding GMA and UNL files associated with those custom (unlocked) maps.

So...is there a way to manually generate the GMA files on a locked map/img? I'm guessing the answer to this is "no"...

No not possible, but have you tried gimgunlock+mapsigpatch?
New maps are digitally signed and have FID greater than 2200 so JM kg. is useless.

catymag--ah, I did not know about the JetMouse not useable on FID>2200; in any case, I take it you're suggesting I use gimgunlock+mapsigpatch on a locked (2016.20) img file and hope that Garmin 2.9 (and higher) for iOS will recognize it without noticing that there is no (valid) GMA and/or UNL file present for it? FYI--I loaded a pre-unlocked IMG file and tried to see if Garmin 2.9 would recognize it...no luck, even if I first remove the GMA and UNL files or just leave them there; apparently 2.9 is looking for those files since it keeps thinking that there are no maps loaded and asks me to download them.

I'll try your suggestion but if Garmin got smart and decided to code newer versions of their iOS app such that it must detect valid GMA and UNL files in order to work, then I think I may be SOL.

    Anyway,
some 2015 new Garmin devices don't accept unlocked maps, they have a protected firmware looking for digital signature in map, and .gma.
If digital sig. and .gma are missing map doesn't work, I guess on new IOS can be the same.
But you can try because in all other previous devices gimgunlock+mapsigpatch works, unlocking and patching digital signature in map. No .gma and .unl needed (remove them if present).

catymag--I'm hoping you're right in that it'll work; I have a gut feeling Garmin wised up on later/new revisions of their Garmin app for iOS by forcing you to d/l the maps rather than including them by default in the app itself. I also discovered that you can't blacklist gold.garmin.com in the /etc/hosts file anymore--doing so will cause the Garmin app to spit out the unauthenticated dialog message for which you can't get past.

I'm guessing that the app checks to see if the GMA and UNL files are present--if they're not, then it assumes you don't have any maps and thus forces you to d/l them before it'll allow you to continue using the app...and if both GMA and UNL files and the map image file are there, then it'll try to unlock the map image using them and if those files don't unlock the map, then the app will tell you that you need to d/l maps (since then it'll know that it's not a valid map image since the GMA and UNL files aren't the correct ones).

Is there a significant difference in using gimgunlock+mapsigpatch vs. using just gimgunlock? I don't know if I have the former or latter gimgunlock but I do know I have a version of gimgunlock that works on unlocking img map files in general since I used it to unlock the 2016.20 gmap3D and gmapprom locked files and I can view it no problem in my Garmin 2.2 app for iOS.

Yes gimgunlock is different from gimgunlock+mapsigpatch. As its name says the second patches map digital signature. New signed maps cant be unlocked by old unlockers in nuvis since some months.
