We have to plug the nuvi in for car use, np plugging in a smart phone to the ciggie socket to keep the battery charged and in a dash holder too. BT on every phone now and modern cars have it as part of the infotainment unit [but they probably have GPS built-in anyway]. A combined BT/FM Transmitter costs maybe $30 now. I have one in my second car which cost $49 ~3-4 years ago, it plays most audio file formats and bluetooth's the nav instructions from OVI Maps or Garmin XT [both on-board maps] via my 5800, muting the music when the voice instructions are received from the phone. That technology is ancient by comparison but it works fine. Modern nuvis have lousy battery life away from the charger, and none of 2013 range fully support CX maps [no EPM]. Most phones will last longer than them navigating in-hand i reckon.

Also, it doesn't have the 3G coverage everywhere to pull the map data (at least not in US and AU)... Sure you have it on major highways, but there you don't need it anyway, signage is awesome.
Plenty of apps available with on-board maps. Agreed 100% about the signage and the crap 3G coverage in both US & AU though.

When you get lost "in the woods" is where a true GPS helps.
And that's also where a 'nuvi-type' car portable device isn't ideal, and is the type of device i think will gradually disappear. Better than a phone though as a back-up in case your outdoor handheld poops itself. What's even better and in fact an essential back up is a paper map in protective plastic, reliable compass, protractor, scale ruler, china graph pencils and some basic map reading/navigation knowledge starting with how to fix your position by triangulation and how to navigate even in rough terrain. Anybody who gets 'lost in the woods' and doesn't have map compass and protractor in their kit needs to pay the bill for any search and rescue mission mounted to find them imo. GPS is not meant to be the sole nav method hiking any more than it should be in the air.

I suppose It's a case of "Horses for Courses"
I've tried Tom Tom, Android and Nokia and even "GPS for Dummies" and the only one I'm happy with is Nuvi.
In fact I can't drive without one anymore. I feel lost without "my trusted companion".
When going for a long trip I even take a spare one packed in a box, Just in case.
Nuvi has also saved me thousands of Rands in Petrol and Toll Fees as I use Trip Planner for Round Trip Deliveries.
I find that other Navigation Systems don't have the finesse of a Genuine Garmin Nuvi.
The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits.

We're Garmin enthusiasts though Dasil. I'm not a 'nuvi hater', far from it as you know. I've got in-dash GPS in my car, but i've always got a nuvi plugged in rather than use it. It made me smile to read you keep a 'spare' packed, 'cos i do the same. At present i've got a 3597 hooked up, sometimes it might be a 1390, a 765, even a 310 or 650 etc, whatever i'm testing. But, there's always my nuvi 500 with a spare battery in the centre console as well. There's a 2 year old Street Directory under the seat and a brace of AU maps in a plastic folder in the glovebox too.

I've been playing Devil's Advocate to a large degree, i rue the day [if it finally comes] when Garmin abandons nuvis as we know them. But i'm a realist and can see what's happening. You can get the maximum value from your nuvis because you know them inside out and use them for business purposes. Most ppl who own a nuvi don't even know how to reset them. Many units i've bought cheap described as 'For parts or not working' have only needed a hard reset and/or fw upgrade. Home and all recent info still on board. They certainly don't want or need to do the things you and i and others here like to play around with. They don't want the aggravation of having to know that stuff for a start, never mind actually use it. Just wanna get from A to B without having to think or look at a map, they don't know if they're saving petrol and tolls ......
