Looking at earlier posts in this thread there's the everlasting urban-forum-myth misunderstanding :banghead: about World Map
v4.0 & v4.06 (with map data from January, 1999)- It's a mix-up of the MapSource versions and NOT the real World Map versions.
The thread with World Map v4 & v4.06 is just Garmin World Map (first release without a official version number, internally referred to as v2) with MapSource v4 + update for MapSource to v4.06.

MapSource history v4.0 & v4.06:
Code:
http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=209
Changes made from version 4.05 to 4.06:
Added support for GPS 12 Arabic.
Corrected various misspellings.
Fixed problem which caused very small download regions not to be selected at high zoom scales.
Changes made from version 3.06 to 4.00:
Added support for new City Navigator product.
Reduced map clutter by making POIs invisible until the map draws to the 500-ft scale.
Reduced map clutter by decreasing the font size for manmade areas, golf courses, and large airports.
Added code to display 'GPS Map Detail' under the scale when detailed maps are being drawn.
Added default directory preference for opening and saving files to a user-defined directory.
Added ability to rearrange column order on left-pane windows by dragging and dropping the columns.
Column order and width are now remembered each time MapSource is launched.
Move waypoint icon into its own column to allow sorting by icon.
Improved accuracy of estimated size at bottom of maps tab.
Removed trailing '.0' from metric zoom scales greater than 1000m.
Allow spaces to be typed in by user while entering a new unlock code (these spaces are ignored by MapSource).
Use the newer
ACTUAL Garmin World Map v4 instead (map data from August, 2006).
