Well, I've acquired a Nuvi 765 and I can't get the file to work. Load it onto the SD card and it won't show.
For nüvi 765, the map file needs to be renamed from gmapprom.img to gmapsupp.img and placed on an SD card in a root folder named Garmin. With latest firmware loaded, the device is capable of recognising a second map file on the SD card named gmapsup1.img in the same folder.

Thank you so much for the quick reply. It leaves me a bit confused. I have always created two folders on the SD card: One named Garmin and the other named Map. I have the placed the gmapsupp.img in the map folder. For this Nuvi 765, I am to put the gmapsupp.img in the Garmin folder? Or, do I place the map folder in the Garmin folder? Sorry to be so flakey....I'm just getting older (well over 70) (not really a reason). Thanks so much.

PS: I've just now put the gmapsupp.img in the Garmin folder on the SD card and still no dice. The Nuvi 765 has been updated to software version 4.5 which is what Garmin Express is stating is the most current software. I'm doing something incorrectly, but I have no clue what.

I do note on boot up of Nuvi 765, for a nano second....the year 2012 is noted....but it flashes away and the map on the hard drive remains a 2009 version along with a 3d 2009 version. Am I supposed to do something to the file names on the hard drive of Nuvi itself??? Thank you so much.

Thanks all! Success, after a lot of trial and error, but that's the way it goes.

The gmapsupp.img goes in the Garmin folder which is on the SD card. So does the 3d map. I do have a Map folder on the SD card which is empty. Have not determined if it is necessary (may delete that map folder and see what happens and report back later).

As I push everyone: May/Can I DELETE the primary map on the hard drive (it's a 2009 map); free up space and place the entire map on the Nuvi 765 hard drive itself, bypassing the SD card altogether? It's not critical because the SD card is doing fine.

Thanks again Catymag and smokefree. Very helpful and great. Wish I could learn faster and sorry for needing what must seem rudimentary stuff for you folks. I do admire your skills.

    @ axxxtw

    - The folder Map is not used by nüvi 765. Different models use different paths. What works for nüvi 7xx is explained by catymag in post #50.

    - If the new map on the SD card is working fine now, you could delete the old map from the device internal memory. I would recommend however to make a backup of whatever it is you're wanting to delete before deleting. Better safe than sorry...

Leave it on the SD card. It'll also work fine on the internal memory in Garmin folder now that you've got rid of the GMA & UNL files. Old ones of those can interfere with operation on an unlocked map IMG of the same map series. The reason to leave it on the card is simple. If you ever load a corrupt map it will brick the device. If the corruption is on the SD card then simply removing it removes the corruption and the device boots normally. If it's loaded internally then you have to flash cure firmware to get Mass Storage Mode back, remove the corrupt file or reformat blah blah ...

No real need for a torrent when there are fast Zippyshare links in both Posts 1 and 2. They allow concurrent download of 6 parts at a time, are more anonymous than a torrent and probably quicker than most torrents unless very well-seeded.

Thanks Neil, smokefree, and Catymag for all this useful information for a rather dated device. One obtains what one can afford, eh?! Neil: Never found a .gma file on the Nuvi 765. Perhaps later I'll relook (even with hidden system files available for viewing). GREAT advice as to the corruption/virtual destruction of the Nuvi 765 hd. I'll leave all on the SD card. Thanks a ton.

which jcv file work with the phone app? is it D3836180A.jcv? bee tryin to get it to show up, no avail. The file D3153230A.jcv saying full screen, but how come so small 20mb, comparing to other jcv files, some kind of sys file? also, what's external point addressing, is it alright for me to leave it out, almost 900mb in size, what exactly is it?

I now see that the original map was from 2009. GMA was not around back then so only an UNL file was present. More info: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ].

The raster D3836180A.JCV is correct file for StreetPilot app. Not a lot of views on it, try a simulated 'city to city' route. Set start point as simply NYC, destination as Buffalo. That'll take you thru the Holland Tunnel too and scrolling thru the route should show several JCVs if the file is working. I think SP does use SID files, to check if they can be used look at the GarminDevice.xml file: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]. Info on files themselves: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ].
