It must be in sd in a Garmin folder, but some old nuvi cant handle maps greater than 2 GB, but you don't give your device details

Use a 2 Gb sd and load a gmapsupp.img less than 2 gb. You can build the one you want with Mapinstall and unlock it with gimgunlock.

For sure it's not the case of an old device like a street pilot. New maps are digitally signed and new 2014/15 devices firmware check for this signature and reject unlocked maps or maps compiled with illegal MPC as you can read on forum in some threads.

navifan2 is perfectly correct. The new map signature does not affect such old units nor indeed even all modern units. droid2012 needs simply follow catymag's advice re naming/placement and limit the image size to under 2GiB [maximum of 2,147,483,647 bytes i.e. 2GiB minus 1 byte]. Hard to buy 2GB cards these days and anyway they are only about 1.86 GiB in size. Fortunately SPc5x0 series can use larger cards, no need to even partition them to 2GiB. Provided the image file is under 2GiB and named gmapsupp.img in a Garmin root folder that series can use a 4GB or 8GB card without problems. Note: GB is Gigabyte [decimal, notation type/factor 1000]. GiB is Gibibyte [binary, notation type 1024].
