I've read [and believe] that Garmin make good money from devices but don't usually make a lot of money from map sales, which explains why all but the base leader-line onroad units are sold with Lifetime Maps.
So, I suspect that it's simply that they hope you'll buy another 'localized' unit when you get to your destination. A flawed marketing plan if you like, because it p*sses off the advanced uses such as yourself who want to have all the bells'n'whisltles on your premium unit when you're away on hols. Generally you can buy an OEM LM on a mid-range AU local unit for not much more [or much less for say 42 or 52] than a One Time map only [no extras] to put on an off-shore unit, and so that's probably one area of map sales which does make them good profit! So they get you either way, unless you are p*ssed off enough to buy a TT instead.
Glad you are sorted and i'm sure you'll enjoy your trip down-under as much as i've always enjoyed my times in NA. If you haven't been here before you'll find that aussies are pretty-much just like yanks and cunucks who talk funny as i've found vicky-verka over there. Even the Big Macs and Whoppers taste the same, but Burger King is Hungry Jacks over here, lol.
OT off ....
PS: If you want to add AU Suna Traffic to your NA GTM35 for nix, head over to [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] if you haven't already.
