Hi, I'm a longtime Nuvi 255 user and since it it still does all I need, I have not bothered to upgrade. I purchased it in late 2008, and have upgraded City Navigator NT North America maps several times. As it is now, I have CN North America v2013.20 on the internal memory of the device (it barely fits), plus a free Caribbean v2.5 map I downloaded from RWSMaps (it's only ~300KB). And on a 4GB mSD card I have CN Europe v2012.40. All these maps are being read by the 255 and working perfectly (SD card named "Garmin", and imgsupp.img file inside Garmin directory, image file name is gmapsupp.img. If I go Tools > Settings > Maps > Map Info: all three maps are being listed, and are checked.
But my problem has been to upgrade the CN NT Europe map to v2014 (already tried several unlocked v2014.1, and 2014.2 versions) by copying the gmapsupp.img file to the SD card, but the Nuvi will simply ignore the maps and does not read them at boot up. If I go to the Map Info section, only the internal maps are being listed (CN NT America 2013.20, and the Caribbean map), but no sign of the new CN NT Europe 2014.1. Obviously in order to copy the new map file to the mSD card, I first deleted the old v2012.4 image file, as the new 2014 is much bigger (almost 3GB) and I assume this is because they combined all of Europe in one file. After seeing that it would not recognize the newer map, and as a reverse test, I once again copied back the v2012.4 map file to the mSD card, and it still works fine. So I wonder if anyone would know if there is some kind of an issue with the newer 2014 maps and the Nuvi 255?
Thanks in advance for any pointers.
I tested the full CN Europe 2014.10 map on my nuvi 205 and it works. The software version of my nuvi is 7.60 (check in Tools - Settings - System - About), maybe you have to update the software version, as far as I can remember with older software it was possible to use maps up to 2Gb only.
Just checked and my software version is still v5.0 so maybe this is the cause, as pointed out this older version will not recognize maps larger than 2GB. My CN NT North America v2013.20 is ~1.8GB and CN NT 2012.1 is ~1.97GB, so they seem to be just bellow the limit.
Can anyone tell me the recommended/safest procedure to upgrade the device software to v7.6? I've heard horror stories about trying to upgrade at the Garmin site and the device being "bricked" if for example the process is interrupted for any reason, local electrical/Internet outage, slow connection, etc.
Thanks for all the replies so far.
