I believe the name on the SD depends on which unit you have. Some of the new ones can use almost any name that ends with "img".
But I have a 76CSx and the maps name has to be "gmapsupp.img". If it's anything else, the 76CSx won't recognize it as a map.

I have a Nuvi 3750 and it worked with the default name. The map looks extraordinarily basic, canals that we are staying on while on vacation aren't even displayed (just a bland "marsh" graphic/title over the whole area.
Before someone links it, yes I've read [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]
The 3750 is really an "On the Road" unit and not designed to display marine charts. It will show some rudimentary info, but you won't get any of the real detailed info, such as water depths and such, that you would get with a bonafide marine unit.
Garmin has Hand Held models like the 78 and 62 which are good, and if you have a ton of money burning a hole in your pockets, you can spend over $5,000 and get one of the new 8000 series units.
The 8000 series does everything.... it evens plots out a course on the waterway depending on the draft of your boat!
My 76CSx does a pretty good job on a small boat and on my jetski.
