If you right click on the first image and then select 'extract' you should get the image file extracted.

Has anyone got these all merged into a single .img file, ideally all the V3's and the V2's that are not in the V3, ie Cotswolds, Thames path etc..?

Why do you want to do this? All devices, that can use raster maps, also can use several images!

In addition to p!xeldealer's answer please note that you can't merge all files. You can merge a maximum of 9 or 10 regions to one file. With more you will exceed the 4 GB file size limit.

Addition: Mapperoni (see next post) ist right, I forgot that. There's a lot of identical contents in the maps. However I'm surprised that the individual 25K contents of each map is so small. rastered maps usually need a high amount of memory.

It's possible to join all these maps and end up with 3 separate mapsets that are all well below 4GB.

I took a close look at the GB Discoverer maps (National Parks, National Trails and UK 50k) and they all contain a set of 67 maps that are exactly equal. This is the autorouting layer of GB that every single map contains. It becomes visible when zooming in in Basecamp outside the topo area of the map. There is also an OVERVIEW_mdr.img in every map that's equal as well.
The 25k maps also contain a 50k portion (visible when zooming out) that can be deleted because we already have the full UK 50k map available.
When deleting all duplicates and the 50k layer your 25k maps can be joined and the data will be reduced by 2/3.

You can achieve this final result:

    • GBDiscoverer50K All.img: 3.2GB
    • National Parks.img: 2.2GB
    • National Trails.img: 1.2GB

For those of you that want to spend some time and create the joined maps yourself, some additional information:

The GB Discoverer 50k map already contains the autorouting layer (67 separate maps) and the overview_mdr.img (search index), so the Park- and Trailmap won't need these files. Actually you only need one img from each 25k map!

    - The National Park maps v3 have FID=2543
    - The National Park maps v2 have FID=400
    - The Trailmaps v2 have FID=400
    - There is only one Trailmap v3 (Coast to Coast) but at the time I created my maps this one didn't exist.

All 25k National Park maps joined in one img:

All 25k Trail maps joined in one img:

Mapperoni that looks great, any chance of putting it up for download somewhere?

What is the highest gmapsup number, that the Oregon 300 and 62s can go up to?

I've gone up to gmapsup3 I think on the Oregon 300.
