Out of interest, why is this the best way to unlock these maps?

Because it's the original way to unlock locked Garmin maps with a 25-character unlock code. It will work by original design since it mimics all Garmin original concepts for unlocking maps that don't need GMA authentication certificates. Hardly no one can tell if i's a genuine unlock or a illegit generated key.
Not so good to have an unlocked map stored in internal GPS memory if its unlocked with an unlocker. If the unit needs repair at Garmin or if it's checked by a special customs unit looking for counterfeit software they might detect illegal maps and make you somewhat sorry for not thinking twice about that matter.
