Can you or anyone else share the header info from your downloaded map from the Type3 pack or any other for that matter? I haven't had a reply to [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] yet. You can find the header date with [Only registered and activated users can see links. ].
I put the map in SD card under Garmin folder and jcv file in JCV sub-folder. Both map and JCV ppears to work but I had to change the image file to gmapsupp.img. I did this using the MSM 2011 40 map though, not this CN 2011 map.

As for the map header, I just downloaded GMapTool. Had a hard time trying to get to the download link. Had to navigate through a number of advertisement pages. Need to figure out how to use the software and report back.

Is this the info you wanted? I had renamed the map file to locked gmapprom.img

    File: D:/My Documents/My GPS/City Navigator 2011 40/MapData/Locked gmapprom.img, length 87736320
    Header: 11.01.2012 16:34:38, DSKIMG, XOR 00, V 11.40, Ms 0
Mapset: CN SGM NT 2011.40 ALL

I find that this City Navigator NT 2011.40 map (both img and jcv files) is more than twice the size of the equivalent Malsingmaps NT 2011.40 but the Malsingmaps map seems better. At least for my home area, the Malsingmaps map displays more junction views. Although searching for POIs on this City Navigator map takes much longer time than searching on the Malsingmaps map.

Anybody has the same experience? Any reason for the great difference in map sizes?

City Navigator 85,680 kb for map, 358,046 kb for jcv
Malsingmaps 39,800 kb for map, 167,984 kb for jcv

Yes, only gmapsupp.img will work in the Garmin folder in SD. You can create a 'Map' folder (no quotes) in the sd root and put many maps in there and use 'anyname'.img eg CNNT_SG/MY_2012.40.img or anything else convenient.

Yes, thanks. I see from your post yesterday that you downloaded the Type3 pack. Same map info as my last Type2 dl, makes sense. Robinang reported a header date of 10.02.2012 which must mean different map info in at least one other pack type (1,4 or 5) for some reason.

Comparison is not always subjective when only one area is examined as you realize i'm sure. Simple answer, have both and use whichever seems best where you are at the time. Don't select both maps together of course or there will be problems. (Go to: Tools>Settings>Map>Info>Check or Un-check as req'd). On the other hand, the two different jcv files in the 'JCV' folder should not cause any problems.

Size could be also to do with differing compression rates used by the mapmakers, not just the map data. Higher compression rates may also explain slower drawing and/or searching.

Also you can seek extra info one the garmin website but if what you want is not there you'll just have to try both out as i said to malebum.

Let me attempt to answer this question.

As far as I know, there are 4 different maps available for Singapore/Malaysia:-

    1. City Navigator NT 2011.xx
    2. Malsingmaps NT 2011.xx from [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]
    3. MSM 2012 v5.xx from [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]
    4. MFM map from [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

1 & 2 are commercially sold (though you may get a free first update for 1 with your locally purchased device) while 3 & 4 are freely downloadable from their respective websites (you need to join as a member).

You can install any of the maps. It is up to you. The differences between the maps are as follows:-

City Navigator map is the commercial map being sold for Garmin devices. If you buy a Garmin device from US or Europe, chances are that it will come pre-loaded wih City Navigator map for North America or Europe. Local devices used to come with City Navigator map for Singapore/Malaysia too. I remembered that map data for City Navigator maps came from TeleAtlas but now it seems when I searched, I find Navtech. City Navigator map has junction view etc. But I think it is updated yearly. Maybe now quarterly but there is a lag time. So, you see the latest version seems to be 2011.xx.

MSM was started by a group of local hobbyists who started mapping the areas in Malaysia and Singapore. They were so successful that their map put the official City Navigator to shame. It was very updated (almost every week) and had many POIs submitted by members (me included!). Eventually, the MSM map became so famous that Garmin Taiwan approached them and a deal was struck. MSM received some funding or something (I am not sure) and Garmin got the use of the MSM map data. The Malsingmaps NT 2011.xx is the result of Garmin taking the MSM map and improving on it by adding Junction View etc. This map has features similar to the City Navigator map. But I was wondering why the file sizes were less than half of the City Navigator map. Latest version seems to be 2011.xx. This is now the default map supplied with local Garmin sets, although at one time, local Garmin sets will come with both City Navigator as well as this map. Not sure if this is still the case.

MSM itself continues to release their own free map on their website. It is actually the most updated of all maps. Weekly updates most of the time. However, there is no junction view yet. So, this map is good for those whose devices cannot support junction view anyway, or who simply want the latest map. The latest map is version 2012 v5.xx. Malsingmaps NT 2011.xx is behind by a few generations compared to this map.

MFM was started by a group of members from MSM who were unhappy with certain things, including the deal with Garmin. When MFM was started, I tried their maps and found the map very nice looking. It displays building outlines. Very cool. Now I have not used it for some time, so I am not sure where it stands. Like MSM, this map has no junction view yet.

I have been using GPS for many years but in recent years, I have not kept in touch with developments. Hence, I stand corrected. This is what I know. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Good summary. Just a few minor corrections.

Map 1 is named "City Navigator Singapore/Malaysia NT 2011.xx" today.

I believe MalSingMaps got/licensed the MPC map compiler from Garmin in exchange of their map data. As a result, MalSingMaps can make their own maps in NT format with more features, instead of the OF format with cGPSmapper. Therefore, map 3 is named "MSM 2012 NT v5.xx" today. On the other hand, MFM had tried to get a similar deal with Garmin but was unsuccessful.

The 5th map containing Singapore and Malaysia is "City Navigator Southeastern Asia NT vx.x", also commercial.
