I have downloaded the CN North America NT 2011.40 unlocked from a different site.
Loaded on a SD card and works perfectly.
With the download came a new gmapbmap.img (basemap) and a gmaptz.img ( time zone).
The gmapbmap.img is huge 49,824 KB. I'm wondering if it safe to load this file on my Nuvi 680.
My basemap file is only 6,056 KB
The last time I tried to update the basemap I got a failled message when I did a diagnostics check.
Of course I backed up all my files so I just copied the old one back, did a test and it passed.
I'm curious to know why this basemap file was included with the new map. Any thoughts or suggestions if I should install the file.
I'm wondering the same thing. However, I don't think it's necessary to update it as the actual map overlays it.Quote:

better not to update it in old models, DEM will slow your units.

Update on the 49,824 KB basemap file.
I went ahead and deleted the old 6,056 kb gmapbmap.img (backed up), and installed the new one (49,824 KB).
Unlike my previous failure in the diagnostics mode, this new basemap file passed.
I will keep it on there for now unless it slows down my device as catymag suggested.
I may be wrong but I don't think it will slow down since the primary map (2011.40) is what the device will use.
what do you mean don't update older models?
What DLC files are for?
The main advantage of having a basemap is that once you pass a certain zoom level the basemap is used instead of your detailed maps which allows for quicker drawing on the device and it can be used at high zoom levels and in areas for which you may not have detailed maps.
A basemap is to allow browsing big areas. detailed maps aren't prepared for this task, with big zooms, device switches to basemap. without it everything will work very slow.
DEM basemaps are bigger because they contains shadings, many users use new basemaps but with DEM removed with GmapTool ,eg. old Garmin units and Phones
