Try also with GMT.exe to split mapset with given FID and map name:
gmt -S -f 5000,1 -m "New map name" map.img
error that gmaptool gives means, that it cant choose by itself which FID/PID and map name to use
When img contains single map, gmaptool use FID and map name from this map. when they are multiple maps, you need to give this values explicit
Mapsource will accept any FID/PID, even different then real FID of the map.

Thanks for replies.
It seems it depends on particular img file with multiple products. Sometimes I didnt even manage to split mapsets by FID, gmaptool crashed or only some were created and there was error. On other img file it was OK, but I wanted to see all map products at once in mapsource so I tried to manually set mapset fid and pid when splitting and sometime it was OK, another time mapsource crashed. So I suppose its not so easy to assign 1 fid and pid to multiple product img file through gmaptool which will be accepted by mapsource

no the problem must be this map, probably it's badly assembled- it gives error in GMT too with the procedure indicated above-
better to download new maps, join them with gmaptool and then create map for mapsource, but you'll leave search-
mapsource gmaptool created maps are just to see them on pc , not good to transfer on gps-
