Followed these steps.
No Joy, reinstalled Basecamp.
Now shows up as device zero in loader, but still fails to load either rgn or gcd.
Fails with the iou error, and the uid changes to a true value.
The gps goes to loader and while I'm watching the Updater screen the GPS flashes white and hangs at loader screen.
Tried booting with usb cable, all good.
Tried with slightly low NiCads (1.29), all bad, hangs on User Message, hangs at loading.
Tried with alkaline with good charge, boots immediately.
Tried with fresh nicads (1.34) all good....

You have hard-reset it before, right? Worth trying again before giving up anyway to reset it to factory settings:
- Make another backup of the files and folders if you want as the reset will also remove all your personal user data
- Power the device completely OFF
- Press and hold the user button, located just below the power button
- Press and hold the power button while continuing to hold the user button
- When it powers on, release the power button but keep holding the user button for the moment
- A message will appear asking "Do you really want to erase all user data?", at that point also release the user button
- Select "Erase" on screen

Yep, multiple times of the past few days
Attempted this morning, same result.
Left as default config after accepting English.
Attempt Updater again.

Sorry mate, it's toast. Almost 100% the symptoms are hardware related, and it will die completely.
