So with restructured sd card, I dont think it applies all the software updates, but it does add the updated map! I can live with that! Excellent, thanks all, my satnav is useable again.

@Scavvy
Many things like Voice *.vpm files cannot be run from the card however others like PIO *.gpi files and map ancillary files like JunctionView can be. Main System Software aka firmware can be updated by putting the later gupdate.gcd file in a Garmin folder on the card and rebooting. If you need to update Voice files then use the SD text command method to do that. BTW, did you check if it's an RWFS device? If so the path 2/: should work to access the card as i mentioned in Post #7. If you enable Mass Storage Mode and make RWFS visible using the Diagnostic Page (to access it either press Speed field then hold Speedometer, or press Volume Icon then hold upper RH corner, for ~5 seconds).
Used webupdate to get gupdate.gcd file, put it in garmin folder with nothing else. But it doesn't auto update when I put it in satnav and reboot it.
What is your current Software version and Hardware version so we can work out what your HWID is & give you the correct FW if your device even needs updating as the last updates are over 4 years old.

It won't update unless it's a later version than what's already loaded and as Garmin_Nuvi said nor will it update if you've used the C4 fw gupdate.gcd with a non-C4 device and vice versa. Also nor will it update if you've got the wrong HWID naming for the SD folder when trying to use TXT commands.Quote:

Another way to confirm the actual HWID on the device itself:
- On "Where To/View Map" screen, press and hold battery symbol in top RH corner for ~5 or 6 seconds to open a hidden menu headed "SW Ver ...."
- Press Next/lower RH corner repeatedly, about 9 times probably, until you see page "Version Information ...."
- Press "Start Test" button
- Press "More" button
- First three lines after Boot BLK/X-Loader/System will show "Bxxxx-00 ....."
- 4 numerals represented by xxxx is the HWID.
IMPORTANT WARNING: You must be absolutely sure to use the correct HWID's boot.bin to make ldr.bin for SD card's HWID folder. If you use the wrong one and it's incompatible with the device it will irretrievably HARD-BRICK it.
Now we know your device's Firmware/Software is up to date.Quote:

If you still feel the need to get your own garmindevice.xml from your device
Extract the Garmin folder to empty SD card, insert into your fully shut down device & switch on ,loader will appear quickly and the command will copy the garmindevice.xml to the 1582 folder on the SD card .Back it up somewhere safe for future updates.
