Regardless, you shouldn't need to access preboot, is there a reason you wanted to do so?

Oh, do you mean after formatting it with RMPrepUSB, I can go straight to Garmin Express to reload all software and maps? I was just following the "How to unbrick step by step" instruction #3 to "Flash ORIGINAL firmware into the unit, using GarminCure3 and Updater.exe." I made .rgn file using the original nuvi25x9C4_880.gcd file downloaded, copied it to the same folder as the Updater.exe files, then double clicked to launch updater and trying to put device into preboot so that I can flash the .rgn to the device. But since I have trouble to put it into preboot mode, the Updater's USB Device field never get a chance to recognize the connected device (although my pc and Garmin Express seems still picking it up as Mass Storage), therefore can't go any further. (See screen attached)

But if you are saying I don't need preboot, I assume I don't have to use GarminCure3/Updater to flash the device with the .rgn file anymore, and can go directly to Garmin Express to update software and maps? Would you please confirm that's ok? Since the instruction has this step I just want to make sure I can go directly to Garmin after formatting. I I now got 12 items in Garmin Express to be loaded instead of 9 like before. Please advise. Thanks a lot for your help.

Your device was not bricked as such so Cure firmware wasn't necessary and nor is it necessary to now load the latest fw as an RGN in preboot. You still had Mass Storage Mode available, not having MSM is a key symptom of being 'bricked'. That's why this thread was spun off from the other thread. So provided your device will now boot without trying to load faulty firmware/software you've fixed it by correctly re-formatting to remove those corrupt files previously loaded. Update it with GE to replace everything possible from Garmin [including latest version fw] and load the basemap then it should be fine now.

Thanks Butters for the reminder, I have hidden the image.

So I re-formatted the device, went to Garmin Express to "install all" updates. However, in the middle of the process (after firmware loading), the process require an unplug/reboot, but I didn't see any "install updates..." on my device after I plug it back in. The screen simply just go into connecting to pc logo, and soon the screen went black. I managed to bring it back when connecting it to the wall charger, it went trough the normal startup screens, but still seems showing software version 8.5, and prompted to restart. After I restart it, it just shows "Garmin" logo for 2 seconds, then the screen went black without going further.

I am not able to bring it fully back ever since, most of time it only starts with "Garmin" logo for 2 sec, and then screen went black. So I can not do anything else for now. I have tried after charging it for several hours, or leaving it disconnect for many hours, but I was not able to bring it back as I used to.

It feels like the reformatting didn't completely correct the issue, the device doesn't seem to run the loaded firmware properly. Do you think I should try to open the device and disconnect the battery and reconnect to clear any cache? Thanks.

Yes you can try by disconnecting the battery for some minutes. If that doesn't work then maybe there is some corruption in non-volatile memory. Clearly there is more going on than just a faulty software file, a successful re-formatting clears all files from the visible file system as you are aware.

Do you have Mass Storage Mode still available? If so, what is showing when you connect to the computer? Also did you use RMPrepUSB for formatting?

Yes I used RMPrepUSB, following the setting in the "unbrick step by step guide." It looks like have been completed successfully. Right after formatting I think I saw only one folder called something like "formatted drive... ". Then after Garmin Express software refresh (I only got through halfway stopping at the restart), I think I saw 4-5 folders.

No I don't have Mass Storage Mode anymore at this moment. I had Mass Storage Mode after the formatting, but now I can't even get the device to connect to PC or boot up. Every time I connect the USB, only a dimmed Garmin logo showed up for 2 sec, then the screen went to black, which really sucks. I don't know what else I can do at this stage. It won't boot when I long-press the power button, so I can't even try the preboot trick (it feels super hard to do anyway).

BTW, is there anyway to completely drain the battery without opening the case? I found it need torx-5 screwdriver which I don't have.

Then certainly the format was correctly done. It seems GarminExpress has loaded something which again this device finds disagreeable although this time it is indeed soft-bricked. As to what that is and why it's 'bricking' the device is impossible to know without loading cure firmware to restore M.S.M., remove existing files or reformat yet again but almost certainly it seems GE will yet again load something that the device is unable to deal with. This is an unusual situation, not what any healthy device will do after updating with new files directly from the Garmin servers following a format.

I'm not one to be pessimistic however this isn't looking good for recovery now. However, generally speaking if a device shows the logo splash screen it can still attain preboot. Modern devices can be notoriously hard to get into prebood and then will only maintain it for a very brief period, mere seconds, if you don't miss that brief chance to start the flash the data stream from Updater.exe holds it in preboot until the flash finishes. So if a flash isn't initiated almost immediately the device will drop preboot. Garmin seems to have intentionally done that to discourage users doing flashing via Updater.exe which to me seems almost mean-spirited of them. You can try this method:
- Ensure the device is fully OFF.
- Plug a suitable USB cable directly into a USB2 port (Not a USB3 port and don't use a hub). Make sure to use a REAR USB2 port only, front ports may not work so reliably for this.
- Load the Cure firmware to Updater.exe and select the radio button next to "USB Device". Leave the GUI visible on your computer with your mouse cursor positioned over "OK" button.
- Hold the upper LH corner of the device screen (use your left thumb is best) and while watching the window next to 'USB Device' quickly plug the cable into the device.
- IMMEDIATELY you see the device details appear in the window either click "OK" on Updater's GUI or just hit your computer's Enter key.
- Keep firmly holding the screen until 'Loader' or 'Software Loading' appears on it at least, if unsure hold until the flash is reported as successful.
- If you miss it start again ensuring the device is fully OFF.
The device will stall on the logo screen and stop turning off when cure fw is loaded and you should again have access to the file system in Mass Storage Mode. Remove files or just reformat again, etc..

Leaving it off for an extremely long period of time will eventually totally exhaust the battery, but we're talking many months or a year or so for a fully charged reliable battery.
