Thread: Garmin Nuvi 1690 GarminDevice.xml is missing

Firstly, you need to make sure it's been properly formatted in FAT32. The built-in Windows tool sometime doesn't do it right for Garmim's internal memory and Mac is worse. Use RMPrepUSB only: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]. Once it's properly formatted if you still have Cure3 firmware loaded, reflash ORIGINAL firmware (Cure fw can't boot). The GarminDevice.xml file is re-created in the device's Garmin folder every time it's booted up. If the Garmin folder is missing then re-create it in the root of the device and boot it because some devices can't boot empty. Sometimes you need other files too for it to boot like text, keyboard, etc. but usually not. Look in the Garmin folder and if there's a file named GarminDevice.temp then rename the extension from temp to xml then connect to GarminExpress to re-download as many files as possible. Your map entitlement will also be offered. Some files, the base map for instance, won't be offered. You can get the latest here: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]. I have a nuvi 1690 so it there are any other files you are missing then let me know.

This morning I flash with cure firmware, then format with RMPrepUSB, create garmin folder, then flash with original firmware, device is boot properly, but no GarminDevice.xml was created.

Is Garmin folder completely empty?

@Butters, yes Garmin folder is empty, except nuvi_drive.ico file who I copy there.
@victor777, thanks man, is working with that file, i change UnitID in GarminDevice.xml with ID from this device, manage to download voices, keboards and other things, and it now is downloading 2019.10 updates for maps.

I think putting an empty XML file in the Garmin folder might work too. Extract this ZIP file directly into your 1690's Garmin folder:

Let me know your 1690's HWID (that's not the 10 digit UID, best not post that but you will need it later). [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]. You probably have a EU version which is HWID 1132. Use method 2 shown here: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ].

Also state the current firmware version please. You can see that on the same hidden menu page also.
